Relax! Common BFS Symptoms Explained

Hi Tony,
RELAX!!... Fascics for twenty years, all normal neuro exams and EMGs, if anyone can rule out ALS you can. BFS typically will have waxing and waning symptoms and parasthesias and muscle fatigue are also common. On top of all that, you had a normal EMG three months after the change in your symptoms. Once, again I say... RELAX!! Keep us informed.

I agree - and if you have been under stress at work (and no doubt some sleepless nights with a baby around) that is probably why there has been an increase in the twitching. Let us know how your EMG goes - I'm sure it will be fine :)

Tony!

I agree with Joe and Sarah....I think an increase in stress can often result in an increase in the amt. and frequency of your twitches. And with a baby at home and another on the way....on top of your increasing concern about the twitches themselves! Honey, you are under a lot of stress. I have had twitching off and on for a little over 5 years, and am pregnant myself. Recently my twitches have increased as well...Perhaps it's the stress on your body from being pregnant, maybe not...I didn't notice any with my last pregnancy! Who's to say. BFS is so poorly understood anyway. Just try not to worry, I'm sure you are fine! Just twitchy.

Cheers,
Jen

Going to see my neurologist today. Plan on doing a neuro exam, emg, and nerve conduction study. Fascs. are going nonstop and muscle fatigue is unchanged. Hopefully I'm ok this is not fun. Tony

Had my exam today the doctor said there is NO evidence that I have anything pathological going on nor is there any evidence that I will develope anything in the future. I feel good about this, another normal emg and nerve conduction study definately points to a benign process. The fascs. are still there, guess I'll have to learn to tolerate them in a way that doesn't cause me to be a wreck. Any advice on how people have improved their situation with bfs would be appreciated. Thanks, Tony

Tony-

You must have enormously strong calves cause mine are really looking shapely after just 3 months of twitching. Do you get them in your tongue, ever? That drives me crazy. It seems there is always this little twitch on the left side mostly noticeable only visually. Anyways, I hope I drop in on this forum only to encourage people after along period time with no change. It is an unfortunate type of fortune but those of us in the early stages take heart in your message!

Tony,
Wow, you do have a lot on your plate. Of course, being in the medical profession always helps...only kidding. It actually is worse because you know too much and worry about things that the average person wouldn't. First, I have had fasciculations on and off for several years, but the past 2 it has been pretty constant. I do have them 24/7 in my feet and calves, and random in other muscles. However, I have times I never notice them and have to look hard to see them and other times I think I have an alien in my body. Stress is certainly a huge factor for me.
I also have been told it's benign. But, that doesn't stop the worrying.
Since you are pregnant, I would be sure you're getting the calcium and magnesium intake needed, even ask for levels. Also, is your thyroid OK? Are you drinking enough water? I know that we all look for "the" answer, but as you know, certain conditions can make fasciculations worse in a person who already has BFS .
Please try and slow down, relax, and tell yourself each time you are doubting the diagnosis that you are OK and this is benign. Hang in there.
Sue

Hello everyone. Has it really been that long. Well things are pretty much the same. Still lots of fasiculations but no problems. It's hard to believe I was so obsessed with fasiculations but I am having absolutly no problems. I hope this note will give people some support. My advice is get on with life. Tony :p

Thought I would give everyone an update. 2 more children. I am going to be honest. I have continued to have fasciculations on a daily basis including right now. In my legs, hands, and arms. Absolutly no weakness. No problems otherwise. My advice is don't worry, this has been going on for years for me. You are going to be okay. I hope this helps. Don't put off being happy. Peace
