Regulating Thyroid Disease

Hi all, I am new to the forum and just wanted to explain my story. I have hashimotos autoimmune thyroid disease. In Sept. of 2007, I went hyperthyroid. I had symptoms of heart palps, sweating, insomnia...and then the twitching started. My doc decreased my thyroid meds and then I went hypothyroid. This is part of the autoimmune disease. I am now trying to get my levels regulated again. I take synthroid daily for the thyroid issue.Long story short, my twitching is still here, though 80% better than it was at the onset 6+ months ago. I have been doing a lot of reading and have found articles stating that thyroxine depletes magensium at a cellular level. Depletion of magnesium can result in twitches. It is also my belief that taking calcium supplements without balancing them with magnesium can result in a magnesium imbalance... and twitches. I was taking Calcium-D for 18 months before my twitches began and believe that was in part, responsible for bringing these twitches on.I have dicsontinued my calcium-D and added magnesium supplements 400 mg/daily along with vitamin B complex. I have found this to be helpful. My symptoms are not gone, but they are much improved. From what I have read, magnesium deficiencies can take years to remedy and many people do not stick with the magnesium supplements long enough. In September I was twitching constantly and could barely sleep. Now, my twitches are maybe 20/hour...yes I have counted them while at rest.My GP believes my twitching to be thyroid/metabolic related and thinks it will eventually subside. But, I did have him run CPK just to help rule out some other musclular things and that test came back normal. It seems there are lots of knowledgeable folks over here. Would love to know if anyone has found something besides vitamins or magensium that has helped them? I will say there sure seems to be a lot of us twitchers here. I know we can't all have some terrible disease!! Just my 2 cents.Linda

Hi Linda. Welcome to the board. I'm sorry you've had such a time of it with your thyroid but it sounds as though you've endured the worst of it and have now settled into benign twitching. You asked me in another post if I found anything that "worked" on my twitches. (And I started twitching--or noticed it--on the afternoon of October 3, to be exact.) Anyway, I've been on B-6 since December. My neuro directed me onto that because of carpal tunnel problems. I don't know if it's the vitamins or my reduced anxiety, but my twitching is waaaay down from last fall. I still get hotspots and twitches are still most common in my ankles and calf muscles. I get random pops in the arms, back, etc. Most days are tolerable now; in fact, some days I hardly notice them at all. And there are still a few days here and there where it's nearly non-stop, somewhere and everywhere, if you know what I mean. Since last Friday, I've been on 300MG of Wellbutrin XL daily and some have reported "twitching" as a side effect; I was on 150MG since August. I'm not sure from the written data if they mean "our" twitching or that which we might call a tic or involuntary movement of the head or a limb. So far, I haven't seen any changes in the twitching one way or the other.I have "back issues" now and even discovered small "dent"--atrophy--on my right calf during my last neuro visit. When I insisted this was a bad sign, he ordered blood work and, like you, it all came back normal. Likely nerve impingement stemming from spinal stenosis caused the atrophy and many other weird sensations in my right leg. Some of the twitching in that leg may also be due to nerve irritation. I see a neurosurgeon on April 15. We'll see.So welcome aboard though it's always a mixed blessing to wind up here--none of us are here because our bodies are working as we'd like. But I think you'll find this site is very valuable and the people extremely knowledgeable and supportive and the ONLY place I visit on the internet related to my health issues.Mark

Hi Linda,What I find interesting is your thoughts on calcium D and how it may be somehow related to twitching. I too have been taking calcium D for about 18 months or so. I took it upon myself to take the calcium supplements. I thought being a woman and having 2 parents with osteoporosis, what harm could it possibly do? Have you mentioned this to your doctor? I also have another question ...wouldn't magnesium deficiencies show up in our blood work? My twitching was so sudden. Was fine one day, twitching 24/7 the next.. and I have been having all kinds of funny vibrations, buzzing & twitching since. I was going through alot of emotional stress when it all started. I have always been a very anxious person, always worried about something or other. I really think stress and anxiety has alot to do with my twitching, but who knows maybe calcium has something to do with it too.thanks Linda for your thoughTs and good luck to you!MC

Hi Mark, thanks for responding. Your twitch pattern sounds exactly like mine. Again, mostly in legs, calves and thighs, but sometimes in bacck, shoulder, arm etc. Will be interesting to see if the vitamin B helps you at all...and the Wellbutrin too. I know xanax helps me, as I take it when I fly. Twitches stop...but I don't want to be addicted to xanax for the rest of my life. Sure wish one of these brilliant doctors would come up with something to help all of us!!LInda

Hi MC, thanks for responding to my post. I am almost positive that the Calcium had something to do with bringing my twitching on. But, it's odd you mentioned stress as an initial trigger. My son was leaving for school Sept. 4th and I wasn't "upset" as in teary about it, but I was stressed, as this was his first departure from home. He left and my twitches started 3 days later. Coincidence? I don't know.As for the magesium, I just ordered a powdered form to mix into tea that is supposed to more easily abosrbed. Will let you know how it works once it arrives. As for magensium deficiency showing in bloodwork, from what I have read, you can have a deficiency at the cellular level and it will not show in the bloodwork. on another note, I have cut all caffeine out of my diet as I have noticed it makes things worse. Have you found this too?Linda

Linda, Hey there. The stuff you ordered that is a tea would not be called "mama calm" would it? I am 7 months pregnant and I baught some at the health food store when this all started for "other reason tho" If you get my drift. I felt like it ramped up my twitches, but THAT could just be MENTAL. A poster on here asked his neuro or rather his neuro asked him why he was on 500 mg of Magnesium...he said "to help relieve twitches", the neuro basically laughed and said "you need a prescription strength dose basically of magnesium for it to make any difference". I was up in the air about that and I asked my doctor. He said that..Yes if there is a true defeciency you DO need a RX strength script OR you need to give it a couple of months to build in your system. Not DAYS, WEEKS, or hours..but MONTHS..most people dont stay on magnesium and calcium long enough for it to make a difference. Just thought I'd drop in my 2 cents for the day! ;)

Hi there, what i just ordered for the tea was called "Natural Calm". I think the docs are right that it will take months to see a big difference from taking the magnesium. It does seem to make mine lessen though and I have only been taking it for about 3 weeks. I figure, hey I didn't get messed up overnite, so I won't be able to fix it overnite either. If the twitches are partly due to the calcium supplements which I took for over 18 months, it could take many months to rebalance. Hope I am making some sense here.Linda

Sure you are. Same brand as Mama Calm! They just labeled it different for expectant mothers. I have the honey-rasberry i think or lemon-rasberry. Its not bad at all. I feel sooooo good today. I had a few twitches upon waking- which I posted a question about under Questions. Today seems to be a calm day. I have been taking some suppliments myself as well as exercising.I hope the Natural Calm works for you!!!! You'll know when you've had to much hehehehe ;)

Glad you are having a good day with the twitches. You mean the mama calm made you twitch more? Or it gave you other symptoms? I am afraid I am lost. Linda

I cant tell. I thought it made me twitch more, but it was also when my ANXIETY was at the highest w/ this twitching thing because I did not fully understand what was going on and I went to the "end of destruction" with it before people on this board and my doctor put things in right perspective for me. My obgyn took me off of it tho..during pregnancy BECAUSE it isn't FDA approved (he said he'd rather me not take it just b/c he's not familiar w/ it).Infact let me just pm you!!!
