Reassurance Needed: Leg Issues

Hi All - I posted here a lot last year and really haven't since my last neuro visit. I again need some reassurance on leg issues I have had since Nov. 07. I was eight months pregnant at the time I started to experience lower leg pain. I then noticed a little dent that was there as well that really freaked me out. I have been twitching for almost 3 years in Nov. So I was OK with it because it had been awhile. Then I start this. Well I went to my neuro when I was pregnant and he preformed a Nerve test on my peroneal nerve and it was a little slow. I was all worried. He said to wait till after I had the baby to do the EMG. So a couple weeks after(Jan. 31) he done the EMG which was normal and my Nerve test was normal too. He then said I had nerve damage or Neropathy that was causing the pain. A few weeks after I got really scared again and had my doctor send me to a different neuro for a second opinion. I went in late Feb for a consult. They every clinical test on me you could imagine. Which was good. He said all it good, reflexes, etc. and that I don't have *LS. He did schedule a EMG for reassurance. I was nervous but had it done on March 7th. He test so many muscles on my left side, foot, entire leg, back, arm and hand. All was normal as well as all my blood work. CK was 49. My right leg does twitch a lot more that the other. I am on the path again of "I have this" and I don't want to go down that road again. My foot is really causing me pain. My right shoe in the back is looser than my left. When I look at my right foot and the muscle(I think it's muscle) is quite a bit smaller surronding my achilles tendon than my left. I know this sounds silly, but it is and I think it's atrophy of my foot. I am not weak. Wouldn't something showed up on the EMG if I had *LS. I might schedule another appt. with my neuro. My leg still causes me pain. Just not sure what to do and need some help.

Hi - this is actually my very first post. I have been reading all the posts since Nov. 07 when I began the twitching cycle and all the mental stuff that seems to go with it. I think we are experiencing the same thing. My left foot is the object of obsession right now. My left foot does look different than my right. I too have noticed my left shoes to be a bit looser than the right ones, as well as my achilles tendon area seeming "skinnier" than my right. There's also a slight indentation on the side of my ankle. I have had surgery on my left foot many years ago and many sprained ankles through the years, as well, with sports, which is probably the reason for the difference. And of course I realize we are not symmetrical, but the doubt does creep in. I understand completely what you are saying and going through. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. You have probably always had these differences, but right now we notice everything about our bodies. You have had good reports back on your tests, and just try to make yourself do something else every time the urge to "check" your body creeps back. I'm going to try to do the same thing. Let me know how you are doing. Take care.

Hey there, I will reply since I have some "couch"...time til I have this baby. EMG is the most CONCLUSIVE result there is in ruling OUT ALS. Now when it comes to diagnosing it. Its a little more extensive and hard. BECAUSE you are ruling out what be causing all the other things that are coming along with it i.e) positive sharp waves, fibs, denervation etc. They have to make SURE there is NOTHING else causing that. Therefore if your EMG is CLEAN after symptoms have appered i.e) weakness, percieved weaknesss, etc..it is CONCLUSIVE. Neuros on the MEDHELP even say that you will show ABNORMALITIES even before a person experiences these symptoms. However when you DO you can rest assured your EMG is clean- when told so. I can provide a kazillion links to back that up if you want me to. Trust me I've searched and digged- never seen a contradiction it.Otay- when it comes to your ankle area...there is NO MUSCLE there PERIOD. I too thought I had MAJOR atrophy on my right ankle/achilles tendon ..I showed my neuro and she merely laughed and said "thats not atrophy for many reasons". 1) your ankle contains no muscles, 2). If that was atrophy and it was that big of a dent, you wouldnt be walking- 3.) your EMG would be screaming.Your doctors will NOT send you on your MERRY way if they suspected something- and by gosh your clinical exam and emg will be ABNORMAL.I am finally starting to believe this. If ya need links to back up my statements with EMG being conclusive...I will provide those. Also you can use the search feature on this site ;)God Bless- Lovely

Hi,I have been twitching all over for 2 years now. Like so many of us, I have a dent in my L calf too and have had terrible pain in that one leg for a year and 1/2 now. I also get a lot of cramps that come and go other places but it is the one leg that gets me worried because it always come back there. It will go away if I dont run, jump and skip but as soon as I do, the cramps come on and will last a few days or longer. I tested myself again (which I rarely do anymore) the other day on the beach ....I ran as fast as I could for several 100 yards to see if I still was able to. I usually won't run/jump anymore because it is just too painful and ends up getting me all worked up. And like before, I get a terrible cramp in my left calf almost immediately.... but it doesnt stop me from running. I can continue on running without tripping or falling it just hurts like heck. I am hoping this is different from weakness because as anyone who has ever done a few sets at the gym will know...when muscle fatigues on your 15th repitition doing a bench press...you just cant lift weight anymore or your arms will collapse. The pain I have just hurts...it doesn't make me trip or stop running. So there must be a difference between craping as weakness vs just pain.I have calmed down a lot over the years and try not to worry about all these symptoms. Occasionally I have a bad dream (like last night) or a bad cramp and like you reconvince myself that there must be something wrong. But after seeing everyones post get reminded that we are all very similar. We have all found every imperfection on our bodies and have stared at our hands feet, ankle, legs, tongue, palates... for hours in different lighting, different positions, until we find that asymmetry we were looking for. So it is good to remind ourselves a big part of curing BCFS is: stop looking, stop testing, stop reading... just eat well, sleep well and dont drink coffee.
