Julia, My GP can order an EMG just by the calling the neuro. He has already offered, BUT did not believed I needed one and flat out told me that his concern was that if I did have an EMG, and didn't believe the results, we would be back to square one.
My neuro told me the same thing. I could perform one if it will give you peace of mind, but WILL it give you peace of mind? Will you worry six months down the road that something may have changed? In other words, I believe they didn't want me to become an "emg addict". Not at all saying that this is what your GP thinks, but mine knows me pretty well.
If you really want one, can you possibly find another doctor or neuro that will grant your wishes?
This is where my trust of my GP really came into play. Do you have a good relationship with your doctor?
