So I have a ranula under my tongue. It's caused from a blocked salivary gland. I've had it for about 4-5 months. Been to dentist, who biopsied it and told me it was a ranula. Lately, with my increased anxiety, I've wondered, but afraid to ask, does Bulbar ALS cause blocked salivary glands. I know it causes malfunctioning of the muscles there etc ... I know this is a hard question but thought yulia especially might know the answer..

nonono, in no case. blocked salivary gland usually happens by itself or due to some infection in the mouth, not by muscle malfunction. Please do not frighten yourself. And do not look at your tongue too often, it is not healthy :)))speaking seriously, what is bulbar paralysis? It means that pathological process reaches so called bulbar regions close to the brainstem, and first of all it causes disregulation of swalowing reflex. The throat just shuts completely under pressure of food or liquid, and people with long term bulbar issues have to use saliva pumps and gastrostoma to function at least more or less normally. This has nothing with sore spots in the mouth, blocked saliva glands etc.I would just suggest not to inspect the tongue too frequently, becasue this definitely causes certain troubles esposing it ti air and sunlight, therefore anxious people may have oral cavity mucosa infections and troubles with tongue epitelium which are painful and uncomfortable.
