Questioning a Doctor's Diagnosis

Dear aj,
Your doc sounds like a real jerk if you ask me. Can I ask you something, did you mention your fear was of ALS or did he/she mention it first and now your worrying?
Which ever, he/she, sounds so unprofessional. ALS is supposedly very hard to diagnose but not hard to spot, so why would he even put that "on the table". If he had any real worries I really think he would have performed the emg soon if not in the same day. He sounds like he's trying to cover his tush but he's doing it with no class.

I've seen 6, yes 6, neuros for the same sort of symptoms and every single one of them said I was fine after the clinical exam. It was me and only me who FORCED two docs, by gunpoint I must add, to perform an emg.

You have no weakness and passed a neuro exam twice. You are fine. But if I were you, and needed to see the neuro again I would definitely get another doctors opinion.
Sorry to rant but that is just a huge pet peeve of mine. People go into medicine because they want to help people not hinder them and when you run across those with the bedside manner of a doorstop you wonder why are they not doing something else.
You are going to be great.

On the first visit he glanzed at the twitching and asked had I ever heard of ALS which just sent my mind racing. He then performed a neuro exam and stated that the clinical exam has positive signs that it was not. The second exam he stated that clinically he did not see it but he was not going to take it off the table because he did not want to send me off and have me come back later down the road and he missed something. I went to the weight room yesterday and did 40 lb curls with each arm and I worked my calves out with 400 lbs. The calves and legs at the bottom twitch like popcorn popping. I will get a twitch every now and then on the knee, butt, arm or shoulder but the calves are 24/7. I can balance myself on one leg also. Last night after dinner I felt those pains that come on the forearms and biceps. The pains are gone this morning but they will be back. I also mentioned to the neuro that all this started after the most stressful week of my life. I am talking fright or flight week. He said that stress would not cause all that twitching. I have read otherwise.

Never mind a** he sounds like an *** to me. Not to pleasant to mention that first off- I would have been in tears. NO bedside manner and it seems that most people on this site have had much better experiences...I wouldn't torture yourself by going back to him!!

AJ,

I have had pain ever since the beginning of BFS and still do, today my fingers, elbows, knees, shoulder blades are killing me and my back but that always has. That is why I believe that BFS is an auto-immune problem just like the other auto-immune diseases, they ache we ache. Lifting so much weight- as you do would not seem to be ALS. I am no expert there are others on this board that can give you more facts on ALS but from what I have learned from them, noway would you have ALS.

Shelley summed it up pretty well by saying your Dr. sounds like an ALS. Making light of ALS and suggesting it to a patient like that is unbelievable but have found alot of Dr.'s very cold and for that I am sorry you had that experience. I am sure one of the senior members here can help you out a bit with facts on ALS. I also know that there is usually no sensory symptoms with ALS and you have sensory symptoms. One more thing, my legs would colapse lifting 400lbs let alone twitch, dangggg..no wonder they are twitching ;) and I bet someone with ALS could not do that either. I will keep you in my prayers...Jenn

I am trying to be positive. I went to bed one night fine and got up the next day with this awful stuff. Do you all have the twitching in the calves that looks like a lightning storm running through it. I have gotton use to it so I sleep better now. I have tried quinine and muscle relaxers. It may slow down a bit but it is still there. I bet since this started i have had over a 100 tubes of blood drawn from me all is normal. The doctor scared me so bad that i felt like my whole body was shaking. The pains I get in my calves are like growing pains. i told the doctor that it was amazing that I help people everyday that are in trouble are there lives are hanging on a thread and when I need help it gets dragged out to the point you feel crazy.

Dear aj,

I most certainly get those "growing pains" in my calf and foot all the time. It drives me crazy. I guess it's just part of the BFS thing.

So when is this doctor going to perform the emg?

Sorry to hear your going through a rough patch but you've come to the right place.

By the way what kind of HUMAN lifts 400lbs? JK ;)

My calves are just like that...ALLLLLL day long. There is not even a one second break from the twitching (except if I'm doing something- I only notice it when the muscle is relaxed. Honestly, there is never a moment that there is not a twitch...

These post make me feel so much better. When i am busy i don't notice the twitching just the pains when they come on. i walked around at the Ashboro Zoo for four hours and had some cramping in the calves that night. i have also noticed some limbs jumping a little as i try to sleep. I just hate i let this bother me so much that i cancelled out on a Staind concert that i had third row sits for.

I tank everyone for their input. I get up everyday wondering when I am going to get weak but I don't just body aches and twitches with cramps in the calve sometimes. I have found the antidepressant cymbalta to be heiplful with the pain.

Went to fragglericks video and it is a carbon copy of my legs. I could video mine and you would sware it's his video. I just get aches in my body to go along with it.

Well I am going for the EMG tommorrow the 26th. I pray that it is nothing bad. I played football with the neighborhood kids yesterday. I still have no weakness, just aches and pains. Yesterday the biceps ached. the twitching is still there with some good ones around the hamstring area yesterday.
