Question about Right Hand Thumb

haha, okay here it goes (I posted this in the questions forum too)

bad thumb

good thumb:

Just some background info--- my right hand has always been the most worrisome area for me. This part of the muscle (that appears with palm down) twitched 24/7 in a very fast, rhythmic pulse that I couldn't feel (only see) for about 7 months. It stopped recently and now this gap has appeared on the other side of my thenar muscle and my hand is tiring and cramping very easily.

Anyways, I want to go see a doc but I am having trouble getting in to see a neuro in the next few weeks at least. I know atrophy is pretty drastic, but it has to start somewhere and sometime, and this gap showed up pretty abruptly. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

definate groove there, like the one on my tongue.

The atrophy in my thumb shows up on the other side though in the membrane between the first finger and the thumb, if you were to pinch each hand in turn at that point there is not so much flesh there.

Funny stuff is atrophy that's for sure, one dr can see it and another can't.

Anyway I have been far too ill this week to worry about anything, laryngitis has taken my voice from me as surely as any notional disease.

Me I don't trust a neuro to spot atrophy, go see a hand specialist.

Andy-

You say this spot twitched essentially non-stop for 7 months and the ridge appeared rather abruptly? There's no doubt that you've got some sort of ridge there, but I guess the question for those who know this stuff out there might be: does atrophy show up "abruptly" or over time? Seven months seems like a long time for a single muscle to be twitching on the way to atrophy without you seeing more signs of said atrophy earlier in the process. The two may also be unrelated as I know a guy who had atrophy in his left hand--the muscles between the thumb and forefinger--that was due to ulnar nerve entrapment.

I'd take PlayfulPants's advice if you can't get into see a neuro anytime soon and see an orthopedic specialist.

Wish I could be of more assistance.

:( I don't know whether this makes you feel better or me worse, but my hands (both of them) look just that way. I'm going to the neuro for a follow-up on the 20th and I'm going to have him give me his opinion. I've had the same sort of twitching and have had finger pain and stiffness. I'll let you know what he says.

I have no idea what atrophy looks like, but just wanted to say that I am pulling for you two guys. (As well as eyennyGlimmer and everybody else.) I know it's a tough mental battle.

We all should actually form our own summer camp, where we get together and help each other out for a couple of weeks. I would go.

I don't know Andy. Your hands look pretty muscular on both hands. Clinical weakness is what matters. You could have the Grand Canyon by your thumb--and it would be meaningless in the absence of weakness. You are OK my friend. Hang in there.

Hey guys,

I'm new here but have been having bad twitching for 15mo now after an MMR vaccine. I have been following your guys post for a while but just haven't posted yet. I have related a lot to Andy's posts. I am young, 28, and have the exact same horizontal dip in my calf, where I get a lot of cramps. I also have much bigger dent by my thumb and back of hand by my middle finger compared to other + gutter on my foot where I see twiching. This is all stuff on my list of things I have been watching/getting worried about.

I do see the groove in your thenar muscle Andy, but how much did you have to adjust the light and the angle of your hand to make it look prominent. Light/shadows are a tricky thing, I notice that certain lighting always makes stuff look a lot worse (dawn/dusk) and when you are comparing sides, the light will shadow the the mirror body part differently unless the light source is directly in front of you. You can also tweak your muscles (consciously or unconsciously) to contract in ways to make it look at its worse. And are you 100% sure it wasn't like that before? You probably have posted it already, but have you ever had an EMG before?

Hi Bird. Strange you mention the MMR. My symptoms started after a Hepatitus Immunization. My mother got Mysthenia Gravis after an Asian Flu shot over 30 years ago. I KNOW that shot changed my life. I'm not sure what it was. I've been told by a doctor that it could have been a reaction to a perservative in the immunization and not the immunization itself. It's a very safe one to get. Who knows!

Andy,

I'll also comment on what I see for what it is worth, these are great pictures, definite difference, but your photos remind me more of a friend of mine who has carpal tunnel syndrome. I would definitely get an othopedic doctor to look at this.

There is one thing that really bothers me about what I see in two of these photos. Andy, it's your coffey table; for heavens sake put some furniture polish on that thing and keep your shoes off of it. :)

andyyy =P
i needed 10 minutes to hold my hand like yours O_o what are you doing
you hold your left hand in another position that the right one, look at the thumb.
okay, there is a ridge... BUT i have exactly the same ridge.
your muscle is even bigger than mine, believe me.
i was never worried about my hand, but my neuro did two EMG in this muscle, the last one a month and a half ago and everything was fine.
i didnt ask for it, but it was done.

i dont know WHY we have this ridge but im sure we´ll find thousands more if we look at other people

try to relax
