Question About Peripheral Neuropathy

I'm not sure that's what peripheral neuropathy feels like. Sounds like you have some sort of skin condition, maybe an allergic reaction to something. I know that when I have excema in the winter (spelling?) that it hurts to get my hands in and out of my pockets, and I seem to get more sensitive everywhere.

Yeah, it's kind of a mystery to me, too.

That is, it doesn't seem like BFS...but I have it in addition to all the normal BFS stuff.

Then again, maybe it's the small muscles in my face and forearm/hand that ache ever so slightly when I touch them. I dunno.

Sharay, well you just made my day, in a peculiar sort of way.

I'll have to send you a private message to your mailbox sometime soon.

For now, let me say that since I started taking Neurontin 2 weeks ago, I've really noticed no other changes except that the skin burning seems slightly higher. Because of this, I am debating tapering down then starting with a new drug. I hate to give up after only 15 days.

I must say that you have also made my day. I've read through quite a few posts on this site and was beginning to think no one else really had this same problem. Like I said, I'm self diagnosed so I don't know if it is a part of BFS or not. It would be good to hear if anyone that has been diagnosed has these symptoms. It really does drive me crazy at times..

I have had a very similar thing going on the last seven or eight months, although my problem seems to be more the actual nerves being sensitive than just my skin (except for my hands, which I'll get to in a minute). With the exception of the face, I seem to have the problem in the same main locations as you: my hands, forearms, feet, and ankles. I can feel it in the inside of my upper arms, too, if I scratch there.

I will feel a tingling or "zing" along my nerves if I bump them or scrape or rub them (like the "funny bone" feeling but in lots of different places), and I have noticed, like you, that the skin on my hands has gotten much more sensitive. Frequently, if I touch something cold, it feels REALLY cold and almost nerve-jangling, as if normal sensations are highly amplified. Occasionally I am also very sensitive to people bumping into me-- it makes me jerk like I've had way too much caffeine, but it doesn't actually hurt.

I have toyed with the idea of peripheral neuropathy, too, but a physical therapist friend of mine who works with lots of patients and whose father actually has PN has said that it doesn't sound that way to her, so I'm back to thinking that it's just hyper-sensitive nerves. I can't think of any other explanation.

And by the way, the degree of sensitivity that I experience will vary. Is yours constant, or worse at some times than others?

I've posted about my weird thing, too, to see if it is BFS related, and have gotten mixed responses. Some say yes, and that they have it, too (which is immensely comforting), and one person said it sounds like compressed nerves. It seems to go hand-in-hand with an exacerbation of my BFS symptoms, so I feel it is probably related, although I can't really explain it, which bugs me. (I've had twitching for over six and a half years, by the way, and I know I noticed some degree of this sensitivity about five years ago, but it eventually got better).

I feel like I'm in an extreme corner of this disease, too, and I wish I could tell you my symptoms were exactly the same, but they seem to be quite similar. Is it possible that we just have really sensitive peripheral nerves?

thank goodness!!! twitchywoman, thanks to your post and along with all of you guys' posts...it made me feel alot better. just recently, i've been complaining that my skin is so sensitive. so sensitive that when i brush into something it feels like it's burning. i thought it's because it's dry but i've been putting lotion on it and it's still feels the same. i've gotten used to ignoring my twtiches but lately i've been feeling ummm icky lately. i don't realy know how to describe it... but i've been having more tingly feeling mostly in my hands and feet. my left foot (ball part) is numb when i walk or stand on it and this is all on top of my twitches and sensitive skin. not just the skin, when i bump into something it hurts a lot more than it used to.

I've gone through MRI and other tests and it all came out okay. sometimes my symptoms aren't as bad but there are days when multiple things are happening in my body...icky feeling haha.

everytime my symptoms flares up...i go back here and read...it does help that i'm not alone w/ this thing...

wow, yes, thanks to all of you.

I agree...when my 1 year old steps on my foot, hurts way worse than it used to.

also, I agree with the waxing and waning...2 or 3 days later after posting this, my skin is less sensitive.

"It's gotta be the BFS".

Let me back off the "peripheral neuropathy" statement....I misspoke. Just BFS showing itself in yet another way.
