Question About Celiac Testing

A friend that has experience suggested I ask to be tested for this. I'm not jumping on any bandwagons but the symptoms do match up. I know that my symptoms match up with many things (BCFS, Fibro, celiac, Thyroid). Does anyone have any experience with Celiac? or has anyone had it ruled out?Jess

From what I know about celiac, the symptoms are supposed to be painful and nasty. We're talking if you eat one gram of gluten you'll be clutching your stomach for a week. My guess is that if you had celiac disease, you would know it.

I agree with Mario...From the sounds of it, there would be no question about whether or not you just have stomache pain...it would be a trip to the ER thinking appendicits or something even more nasty. I would think you would know that something was really really wrong...and I doubt you would even think about taking Tums...more like thinking about which is the quickest route to the ER.

Yes, a friend of mine has Celiac's and it can vary in intensity - per individual and also through time for each person. You can be tested, but in the meantime you could also try to cut out gluten products and see if you improve (although it may render the antibody test negative). But if you improve that is a test too and it is the only treatment for Celiac's (unless medical science has developed something new recently). Celiac's, if severe, can cause you to not be able to absorb some nutrients - some of which may cause a deficiency which in turn, can cause bsf symptoms.Yikes - 2 year old twins must be a handful. Whatever you do - don't let them know you are compromised physically!! Tell them the soft cast is a new fashion or something..... ;)

IBS tends to mimic celiac and often pairs with autoimmune conditions such as bfs. It wouldn't hurt to try eliminating gluten from your diet for a time and see if your symptoms improve. I've had IBS for years, and it sent me to the emergency department a few times in the beginning. Now, I'm rarely bothered by it and eat whatever I darn well please. :D)Blessings, Sue
