Yes pinched/trapped nerves can be a cause of twitching. However it would depend on where the twitching was. One pinched nerve is not going to cause widespread twitching, but a pinched nerve in the neck for example could cause twitching in the arm.
I believe that closed MRI's can be better for looking at the spine as opposed to an open scanner. The closed scanners are not that bad and you are probably only looking at about 20 minutes for a neck scan. Whether you need one or not is another matter and the best person to ask is you primary care physician initially. I would suggest a referral to an orthopeadic specialist who will be able to assess your neck and decide whether a scan is appropriate.
