Pain in Knee Rear Area?

What is behind the knee (back of the leg), running from the calf to the hamstring, that can hurt so badly? I've tried to find something on the internet that would provide me with this information, however everything I have found deals with the front and sides of the knee.

Can anything sinister begin in the knee area?

Thanks.

You have ligaments and cartilage in the back of your knee as well as the front and sides. You can get a cartilage tear easily that could cause swelling and pain. Nothing sinister that I know of, my husband has had about 5 surgeries (sports related) and they have scoped pretty much all angles.:) Knee problems are more related to cartilage, bone, and ligaments, in fact the knee cap is one of the easiest parts to dislocate. Hope this helps, nothing sinister that I know of.:)

What could begin with the back of the knee and eventually (after a few weeks) involve the whole knee with tingling, pain, pressure?

Is this something that I should try to see my neuro about or should I go with my PCP's initial thought that it is "bursitis"? Other than the continued twitching and the finger, toe, and lower leg pain at the onset (over a year ago), I've been fairly lucky with this from a physical standpoint. I guess that's why I'm concerned about this new development. I have had a ton of anxiety-related symptoms and it doesn't seem like it could be anxiety-related.

Guiness, there is nothing ominous (as in **S) going on here, but perhaps you need to see an ortho. There might be referred pain from some sort of knee injury.

The other possibility is a blood clot. If you are taking birth control pills, (I don't know if you are a man or a woman, sorry...) you might be prone to blood clots. This is potentially a more serious problem, but easily treatable. There would be warmth and possibly swelling, or perhaps neither.

Your doctor might be right also. It could just be bursitis. Regardless, if the treatment isn't helping, it seems it might be time to call your doctor again. No need to suffer with pain and discomfort.

No worries, though, it isn't a symptom of **S or *S.

Blessings,
Sue

One more question, because this BFS has turned me into a Doubting Thomas. Should I be concerned that the dull pain, tingling, and pressure has effected the front of my knee, as well?

Also, my leg just doesn't feel right from my quad down to below my knee. I don't have difficulty walking or getting out of a chair or anything like that, although activity seems to aggravate this.

I really do appreciate the time you have taken to answer these posts. I'm just at a loss about how quickly the leg thing has gone from pain, tingling, burning behind knee (not everyday, but for about 5 weeks) to fully involving my leg (in less than 5 days). I've never had this happen before.

Guinness -

I have the same thing going on right now - your description sounds like it fits almost to a T.

It could be just about anything - there are all sorts of muscles, nerves, tendons and joints in play with your leg, and if any one small thing gets even slightly out of whack (or even your lower back), it can set in motion a whole series of events, all of which bring different sensations, discomfort, etc.

It is not anything ominous. Especially **S - any neuro will tell you, as mine did, that this type of pain/discomfort/parasthesias presentation is just not consistent with that disorder. And MS? I hardly think so - this just isn't how that disease presents itself, typically, and the fact that you're not overwhelmingly disabled at this point (given that your leg would be the focal area) leads me to doubt this is some MS exacerbation.

You are going through something a lot of us are/have going through. None of us has been diagnosed with a serious illness, and no one has dropped dead. Let yourself be at ease.

All the best -

JG
