Over a Year Later: Hand Concerns

Well I made it a year and a half without coming back and posting. So perhaps that's progress. My newest concern has me quite worried. My hand feels tight / weak. Mostly in the thumb area.My thumb pad seems more sensitive to touch. Like when I text or use the remote it seems like its irritated. The thumb itself feels hard to bend at times. My hand in general feels clumsy. When I try and test my hand strength it feels normal or as strong as it always has. When I rest my hand flat on a desk or something I can feel a buzzing in my palm.I haven't seen any obvious twitching but I think I've felt some but then that worries me because it seems like I've read that you would have weakness before you see the twitching. Any thoughts ????

possibly carpal tunnel? how much do you text or use a smartphone? possibly take a break for a few days and see if things improve? unfortunately sometimes the simplest solution is the real one...

What you are describing is often what we refer to as "perceived weakness". A good rule of thumb is when you find yourself using the word "feel" to describe the symptom then you are NOT describing clinical weakness (the weakness associated with ALS). Remember that an "ALS story" of weakness involves an individual that feels normal but loses function due to clinical weakness. For instance, if I insert a key into my front door lock and attempt to turn the key but cannot due to weakness. My hand/arm feels normal but I don't have the strength to turn the key. I might actually think the lock was broken because my hand seems to be working fine. ALS is about failing, not feeling. You are fine.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and respond.Progressively weaker and muscle weakness that slowly gets worse are some of the comments on ALS websites that trouble me.Other talk about stiffness which I feel.

I've read more posts and stories of ALS than I care to share. At the same time I've read and discussed more stories of BFS than most people here. What you describe matches what I've heard from BFS'ers perfectly, and sounds nothing like ALS. Not to mention, you are at least 1.5 years past onset of symptms. To even consider ALS is absurd.

The BFS symptoms I've had in the past are not related (at least in my mind) to my current concern. This is something new and has only been going on a couple of days. Trust me, I want nothing more than for you to be right. If you know about health anxiety then you can understand how my mind works.About a week ago my hand started feeling clumsy, and stiff. While working I had pain in the fat meaty (palm?).I just wonder if ALS presents itself that way or if it would be more like all of the sudden I could hold a pen?

I understand that in your mind your past symptoms are unrelated to these. That's the problem with your mind, and everyone else's. When you have our irrational, anxious minds, you take every (or some) new symptoms and think THIS new sx is "the start" of ALS and everyhing in the past was unrelated. So not only is the description of your symptoms consitent with BFS stories, but the manner by which you reason is as well.

You sound like me when I tell others about their problems. Isn't it amazing how easily when can explain this to people when its not about our problem?I hope you right , and I know by past experience you probably are.I just have to find the best way for me to deal with this anxiety, I hate when my mind begins to spiral out of control.

HI marcus, I can tell you that I have recurrent troubles with my thumb very similar to yours. In my case it is definitely related to a hell of typing I have to do and few day with less typing usually helps. I also thought I became progressively weaker,, but in fact the thumb only gets stiff, then awkward, then painful (bloody painful i'd say) and then it comes back to life.

Hey Marcus,I've felt similar symptoms as well, numerous times I've felt tightening on the top of my hands, even when i don't extend my fingers. I can usually feel this after typing for sometime. I have also had buzzing in my palms, but usually after carrying something, and occasional it just buzzes for simply no reason at all. Hope this helps.
