Normal EMG - Neurologist Discharge

As said in my previous post (Elevated CPK), the results of my last EMG were described to me as normal by the Neurophysiologist.I've now received a discharge letter from the Neurologist, based on the EMG results that had been reported to him as normal and without even evidence of hyper-excitability.Note, that a follow-up appointment had been previously planned, thus a discharge letter without encounter implies that the EMG per se is enough to say what's going on.I'm not surprised by the discharge, as you all know. But, equally, I'm surprised the absence of hyper-excitabily in the EMG. Believe me, the last couple of days have been a constant twitching (while the rest of the week had been pretty good). Even my pecs did twitch (very, very rare for me) and my tenar eminance while eating (a first time ever...when I do eat, I never feel twitching - maybe because I like so much my food????).So, my assumption is that fasciculations are very common. As I did not feel the "tumpers" I do ofter refer to as strong fasciculations, while I was having the EMG, I've not idea what they may be in "EMG terms". However, fact is that the EMG was normal, and whatever we know is based on the information we get from the Neuros. If the Neuro says that I'm normal, then I've got to happily believe him!

hi Edado. Same thing happened when I had my EMG. I was definitely feeling the fasciculations, or so I thought, but they were not picked up as "fasciculations" by the EMG. I was explained that fasciculations have a very precise EMG signature, and that other kinds of " twitches" would not, technically, be fascics unless they fulfill a very precise definition (and also no neuro apparently care about them in EMGs). I remember reading quite a lot about this "official/non official" fascics things on MND sites - but I'm not going there anymore :) so I can't be more precise, sorry...So bottom line: i) yes you can feel twitches, but to be true fascics - and reported as such - apparently they must fulfill very strict EMG characteristics. If they don't, theyre' not technically true fasciculations. And ii), as Cindy wrote: congratulations !! Yeehaw !!jeje

Yes, I've wondered about this too. All that twitches is not fasciculation ! And all that fasciculates is not ALS. Perhaps BFS should be renamed BTS.My guess would be that most of us here twitch but don't fasciculate.
