New to Site, Muscle Vibrations and Twitching

Hi. My name is Frank. I am new to this site and after a few days of browsing decided to sign up. My story goes more or less like this. Started twitching around 4 1/2-5 months ago. However for at least a month or more of this time experienced more muscle vibrations then anything else. Around a month ago my symptoms progressed to generalized twitching which happens just about everywhere on my body but never in the same spot other then my feet for more then 10 or 15 seconds at most. I
have had 4 neuro exams-all normal and a clean emg at 2 months or so.
I feel very disturbed by the twitching still however. Also in the last week or so I have had some throat symptoms not really trouble swallowing but pain on the left hand side when swallowing and a funny lump type feeling at times and an urge to cough or clear my throat.
Alas, to my questions. Is there any real evidence between having a thyroid distubance and fasiculations? I have hypothyroid and also a thyroid nodule on the left side of my neck.
Is there any real evidence between an anxiety disorder and having fasiculations? I too have an anxiety disorder.
I ask for "real evidence" in so far as everything out there seems like conjecture. If there indeed exists causal relationships how come we do not here of fasiculations being a prominent symptom of either?

This site has been a help. Thanks.

Frank

Hi Frank!

I'm no expert, and I have no proof of a connection. But I have read al ot about thyroid/twitching connections. If you go to any prominent thyroid forum or site, you will find twitching as a symptom of hyperthyroidism. I am hyperthyroid, and have a multi-nodular goiter. I noticed my major twitching within 2 weeks of taking synthroid. I went off, but the twitches stayed. I changed meds to Armour, and this has helped with my thyroid concerns.

As for anxiety, welcome to MY world! I strongly feel there is a connection. (By the way, there is also evidence of thyroid/anxiety connection mentioned on many of these sites too!) My mind played some real tricks on my body. I believed my swallowing and speech was impared. I also believed I had weakness. The more I focused on it, the worse it got. The minute I went on meds. (Zoloft and Xanax), and stopped thinking about it, the symptoms stopped.

Professionals don't ALWAYS have the answers. I have found more useful information here, than from any of my Dr.s. But having ACTUAL PROOF would be extremely helpful for all of us in overcoming our fears!

I hope you find the answers you need.

Hi Frank and welcome to the community. Twitching stinks, doesn't it? I posted something I got off the NIMH website several months ago listing twitching as a side effect of anxiety (or more specifically, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD.) If you do a search on this site for GAD I'm sure you'll find it. My neuro told me that anxiety exacerbates BFS because of the release of adrenaline, which is a strong nuerotransmitter. I agree with Kim, if you think your problem could be caused by anxiety, you may want to try an anti-anxiety med or anti-depressant. But if you have a thyroid problem that could well be the cause as well. Either way, it's still BFS, a BENIGN condition! Celebrate that!

Cheers,
Jen

Hi Frank,
Thyroid problems definitely can cause twitching. It was the very first thing my doctors checked. Go to medhelp.org and look around for twitching questions. Very often the Neuro will suggest thyroid problems.

Twitching with anxiety is a very well known occurance. Don't get hung up by the word fasciculation - it's a medical term for a type of muscle twitch. Most people wouldn't know that stress causes a spike in epinephrine unless you use its more common name, adrenaline.
