Neuro Didn't Examine, GP Visited Today

Here's the summary of seeing my neuro yesterday and my GP for physical med today. The neuro didn't even examine me after coming in with worsening issues and my tongue twitching. He said that this is all stress related and nothing of concern but he sent out my blood for a CK test. No physical examination. If there were any significant findings he'd want to see me.I left beyond mad.I saw my GP today and she examined me with concern because she thought my neuro was just brushing me off. My reflexes were brisk but she said not to be concerned by it. She also went into detail about patients she worked with that had ALS and assured me what I have is most likely not ALS if any chance at all. My hoffmans sign was negative and I had no signs of poor motor function. She told me in addition to this that if my reflexes were ABNORMAL and not brisk, there would be some cause for concern however, she is referring me for a brain MRI because there is a very slight possibility though not likely that it could be MS. We discussed benign fasiculation syndrome and her words were " id have to agree that it seems that's the case but with the other symptoms I want to assure you that you're okay so would you be alright with a brain MRI?" I agreed. I inquired about an EMG but she said if my CK levels are normal, there isn't a point especially at my age.I'm going to stick with my GP on this one who gave me a holistic examination. Thoughts are appreciated!

Sounds great. Get your MRI done quick (not because I think you might have MS, but because she now implanted that word into you brain and most likely you will start to worry about it), and then move on with life and kick BFS in its butt.

ucdguy - do a google search on brisk reflexes and anxiety. That will make you feel better. They are strongly correlated with high anxiety.Mitra

thanks guys! i'm going to see a psychiatrist today to see if i can start something to calm this all down. It still lingers in the back of my head that " what if it is als".

Also keep in mind that on top of anxiety, a lot of people just have brisk reflexes. My GP said that she sees about 3 out of 10 people who come in a day who just have brisk reflexes. If I think back, I think I've had them my whole life.Good luck with your doctor - I think you have a very common fear, but time reduces it significantly.Mitra

My advice...listen to your dr and neuro....DONT DR GOOGLE! And try and relax....there are lots of people on here with brisk reflexes...I've had them since I was 14....I'm 48 now and they are still brisk..I'm also a super anxious stress head...and when those ugly little doubts raise there head ....say my neuro isn't worried neither is my dr...so why am I worried....hugs shannon

I think you have a great GP. I like how she said "I want to assure you you're okay so would you be alright with a brain MRI?"What a calm, reassuring doctor. I like her.

sorry the neurologist blew you off. but they see a lot of us. the neuromuscular specialist i was lucky enough to see for an emg says he sees about 3 people like us a month for testing. but he was relatively patient and kind despite this, and it was very helpful.seeing the psych to get the anxiety under control was a very wise move, imho.
