I had a neuro appt today. I have had fasics, tongue weakness, bilateral hand weakness, etc. I was hoping to get another EMG on my arms, but he did an exam and told me he wouldn't authorize it, even with some prodding by me. I talked about the Hart study, the VGKC antibodies, etc, and he basically said "so what, even if you find them, what are you going to do about it". He went on to say that the muscle neuro clinics (?) used to be full of people that had cramps and fasics, but not any more because they've been found not to cause anything. He then told me to get on with my life, that in his time as a neuro (40+ years, he is well respected here in St. Louis) NOTHING has EVER come of benign fasics. Nothing. Not in research or anything he has ever seen. They don't cause enough of a problem or anything to bother with, is the message I basically got from him. He acnowledged that lots of people have them, but they're a nuisance and nothing more. I think he basically was throwing me out of his office. In my opinion, there are many more people that have this, go to they're doc, he says they're OK, and they're done with it. I think we make up the loud minority (not a bad thing!!) I think he was not necessarily irritated with me for being there for the third time in 8 weeks, but because I wouldn't let it sink that this is no big deal. He gave me some Klonopin and told me to get on with it and enjoy. He's also part of a large neurology group, and has published, so I guess if something was out there, he'd be aware. I think we all kind of know this, but its so weird that the "what if" gets us, especially with most people here having a tendency to be anxious anyways.
Anyways, I thought people might be interested in this. I know some people obsess over every detail, every symptom, etc; I certainly do right now. Seems like passing gas with an offensive smell is cause for concern sometimes. I guess all you can do is get on with it and try not to worry. I'm sure someone out there will someday get something sinister that started with BFS, and WILL be something bad. The thing to remember I guess, is that one probably had NOTHING to do with the other, it was just the law of averages and bound to happen to that person, unfortunate as it is.
Hope this helps some of you.
Chris
PS He gave me some Klonopin, I'll try it since it seems to work for many here.
