Nerve Conduction Studies vs SEP?

I am not sure if a sensory evoked potential test is the same thing as nerve conduction studies. If they are the same I had both the nerve conduction studies and an emg on the same morning with my initial neuro visit.

Hi Joanna,
Somatosensory evoked potentials tracks amount of time nerve impulses take to travel up and down the nerve pathways and it isn't the same as an emg.
I've had it, it is very relaxing. It is done to rule out ms and peripheral neuropathy.

It takes about an hour, and you have to wear sticky goop on your head, plus you have to make sure you shampoo in advance so the sticky goop will stick properly. They also place little stickies all along your limbs. You won't be able to wear shoes. Bring warm, comfortable clothing and remember to relax. I kept clenching my jaw and the tech kept hollering at me to stop because she could tell (without even looking at me,) from my results that I was clenching, lol.

It's a piece of cake, don't worry. I got my results on the spot, but it should be within a day or so.

Blessings,
Sue

I had the test done they stuck electrodes all over and to my head
suzi is right very sticky it took a hour and a half to do it. I actually
had two of them done one in my home town and one in Cleveland
I had that test done the day before my NCS,EMG test. It was not bad
but the one in Cleveland took awhile and they gave me a luch break
before the second part and they sent me on my way to lunch with
electrodes stuck to my head   boy did I ever look like a
Dork... that was the worst part.

Not a bad test at all, but lengthy. Took quite a bit longer than my recent EMG. My results were normal. I don't know how it differs from the NCS, but apparently it does. I did not get the results immediately because it was done by a tech and the EMG was done by a doctor who immediately shared the results. See if you can push them a little to get the results fast. Good luck.
