Need Reassurance: New Symptom

Robbie...I get these 'jumps' as well. I often get them while trying to fall asleep in bed: "sleep starts". I also get these jumps at times only when I am sitting at my desk at work. Same as you... hand on the mouse. They are jumps of the whole body though, like a shoulder shrug, or what you would get when you are scared. It's weird, but seems to be connected to BFS somehow, as several people on this board have gotten them.On another note, my anxiety crept up again this weekend after two strenuous days of lifting weights. I have a hotspot in my right tricep that doesn't want to quit. Just keeps popping and popping. 24/7 twitches were NEVER my thing throughout the whole course of this with me, but I guess it's my turn. Also had a non-stop twitch in my left thigh, right above the knee over the weekend, but I think I beat that one.HOTSPOTS!!!! Ugh...-Ant

I had these jumps as well, in addition to the twitching. You are right that it is most noticeable and intrusive when you are trying to fall asleep. You guys might want to look into food sensitivities and 'Leaky Gut Syndrome' as my twitching and jumps were directly related to foods I was sensitive to. Food sensitivities can form in adulthood for several reasons, most likely due to 'Leaky Gut Syndrome'. They aren't allergies, they aren't permanent, and they can be treated. I have a rather lengthy post in the 'Experience with BFS' section of this forum that goes into detail about my experience and what I have learned. Have either of you been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) in the past or do you experience frequent diarrhea or constipation? These are some of the tells you might have a 'leaky gut.' Anyway, check out my post and evaluate for yourself if it might be something you have yourself. I wish you the best of luck in your quest for answers. Let me know if you have any questions.

No Leaky Gut for me, but I do have a sensitivity to gluten (Celiac Disease), and am currently on a gluten-free diet. All of this started at the same time, and the gluten-free diet seemed to coincide with the twitching. -Ant

I've had hypnic jerks for over 20 years. That's about as unscary a symptom as you can possibly have, nearly everybody has them when they fall asleep, to some extent. I doubt it has anything to do with BFS.

RobbieBFS, I hope the Valerian Root pills work for you. Because different brands have different potency levels you may need to adjust how many you take based on the brand and the dosage. One thing I have noticed is that the labels are usually very conservative. I've seen two different homeopathic doctors and both of them would recommend a dosage above what the label recommended. When I asked they both basically said the same thing. Natural herbs are not like prescription meds and are much more safe. Just remember everything in moderation. :)MarioMasher, when I had this symptom it was very intrusive. I do realize that it is normal to have the jerk or the falling sensation sometimes when you are falling asleep, but this was much more frequent. Imagine trying to fall asleep with that sensation happening every few minutes. That's what it was like for me anyway. I found it very troubling when I noticed the symptom increase in frequency too.

I'm going to resurrect this thread rather than start a new one. I get those sleep myoclonic jerks periodically, complete with the falling sensation. Never concerned me. For a while, I also occasionally get a jaw contraction just before falling asleep (which sometimes results in a bitten tongue). More annoying than the myclonic jerk, but it still didn't concern me. For the past several nights, I've been having what I think are hypnic jerks, but they've been frequent--one every couple of minutes until I fall asleep--and more widespread. Legs, arms, hands/fingers, and--get this--chest muscles. It's a sudden, single contraction. The sleep myoclonic jerks definitely happen in that just-before-sleep stage. The lastest ones seem to occur earlier in the just-before-sleep stage. I feel like they happen when I'm just starting to fall asleep but am still somewhat conscious. It arouses me, I try to go back to sleep, and there's another one. I think I have dream-like images in my head when they happen, but I don't have that falling feeling, and the jerks don't seem to be related to anything going on with those images (I'm not calling them dreams because they don't seem to be as organized as dreams). It seems kind of ironic that the increase in jerks happened about a week or so after I started taking Amrix, a muscle relaxer, for headaches. I've also recently begun taking a magnesium, B-2 (riboflavin), and feverew supplement for headaches. And magnesium is also supposed to also relax muscles.Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone gets these jerks/contractions in places other than legs and arms. I just spoke to my neuro yesterday about the results of my c-spine MRI (some arthritis and stenosis between C6 and C7 if I understood correctly) but didn't mention the jerks because they only happened for a night or two before last night and weren't that bad. After last night, I was considering calling him again but don't want to if my contractions in unusual places aren't that unusual.

Were these ever diagnosed? Did you notice anything that made them better or worse?I did notice that my essential tremor has been a little worse these past couple of days. It's usually barely noticeable, and sometimes it seems to disappear. I wonder if there's any connection between ET and hypnic jerks. So now I have hypnic jerks, essential tremor, and twitching. Quite the collection of movement disorders. At least the twitching has been a little better lately.

Robbiebfs,You are handling this perfectly!!!! I plan to do what you are doing as soon as I get done with this next round of tests and second opinions.Krackersones
