I saw my GP today for a regular physical. He's the one who told me 15 months ago that there was no way I had ALS when I started twitching in my arm. He sent me to the neuro - who did the normal office exam, normal EMG and another normal office exam, all the while also telling me no ALS.
Well I saw my GP today and we had a good talk about my ALS fears. I asked him in depth questions about atrophy which I've really been hung up on. He told me that in ALS - atrophy occurs as the muscle is unable to function and that the two go hand in hand. He said it is impossible to have atrophy and still have normal function in that muscle. He also told me that at the 15 month mark, there would be serious, serious problems evident in a person with ALS. He basically said ALS is relentless and in most cases very rapid.
Even though what I'm saying here probably isn't news to most of you, it sure helped me to hear it from a doctor today. I really, really want the monkey off my back after all this time.
