My BFS and IBS Link

I have been off the group for nearly 9 months, still dealing with BFS. Since then, I went to Mayo, got shocked and prodded, and was pronounced completely normal with BFS and maybe some strange migraines. Since that time, I have had zero anxiety (that's long gone), and have discovered a really strange cause that links to my BFS episodes--Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Since then, when I eat something or an amount that exacerbates BFS, I go twitch city. IBS has no root cause, but in managing it (which for me means eating less, basically, which isn't all bad) has caused my twitching and paresthesias to become minimal. The drugs that work for me are anti-cholinergics like Benadryl, but their effectiveness is limited in time before my bod apparently gets used to them and they quit working. So, I start, take the drug for a couple weeks, then quit for awhile and start again later. My biggest challenge right now is not to let twitching episodes ruin my sleep, which they can do, and that can make things so much worse in all aspects as you all know. Also, my ENT found that I have two structures rubbing together in my sinuses that absolutely should not be rubbing, which will need surgery. My sinus issues also get worse when the twitching flares, so in December when I get this issue corrected, I'll find whether this irritation is feeding the BFS and IBS. If my BFS is responsive to sinus surgery, I'll drop be and let you know.I don't plan to be back here often, but wanted to let you know that my anxiety is gone, and that I've found a connection in my case that ties BFS somehow to digestive issues.I don't really have any more advice to offer, though, except making peace with the fact that I twitch from time to time.

I have to say that in a lot of my symptoms, BFS and IBS seem to go almost directly hand in hand as well. When one is flaring up, the other flares up too. When one goes away, so does the other. So you aren't alone in your findings. I have thought that BFS and Irritable Bowel (at least for me) have been dependent on one another since the start. My symptoms for both of them started flaring up two months ago on the exact same day!

Count me in. I have had IBS for years and I found out through my gastroenterologist that IBS and migraines also run hand in hand because my 10 year old daughter now has IBS issues and headaches. Another problem that I seem to continuously battle with are low ferratin levels (low iron stores). Your serum iron can be in normal range and your iron stores can be depleted. I discovered this problem when I went to my GP with terrible fatigue, muscle aches and my hair was falling out in measurable amounts. Low Ferratin levels also have a direct correlation to Restless Leg Syndrome for those of you who suffer with this.StacyDance

Cool, thanks for the info. I'll mention it to my doctor the next time I'm in there. I never thought to look for that before. Thanks a lot!
