I am having a hard time believing my muscle twitching is just nothing... I have had constant left foot twitching same spot for 4 months now, had EMG and basically said could be caused by injury...doesnt make sense b/c now my right foot twitches all the time, and I twitch in thighs, right knee, arms, calves, fingers and last night tongue! So, I am just wondering where do I go from here? I am trying to just pretend it is nothing....but is is scary! I am scared b/c I dont know why all of a sudden I get twitching, muscle pain and crampy feelings all the time! Does anyone have any suggestions and is there any meds that will help? Someone suggested acupuncture, anyone try that? If so, did it work?I get lower back pain a lot, do you think I have some thing going with my back causing this? I dont know why the twitching would be widespread...

I started Zoloft last night, so I can't tell you if it works yet. All I know is that I've got to get this health anxiety under control and I can't take Ativan (which helps quite a bit) forever. I expect there may be some initial negative side effects, but I plan to stick it out. Constant anxiety over time is toxic to the body. I would encourage you to try anything that you think may switch your focus and decrease anxiety: yoga, meditating, accupuncture, SSRI's and benzos, guitar lessons, whatever. Is it possible that all of our pent up anxiety over time has done a number on our systems? Possibly. I'm one who never really thought I was anxious. Maybe I was a bit out of touch with my emotions. Don't know. The problem with BFS is you get something new almost every week (or day). I have a lot of pain too and it drives me nuts, possibly more than the twitches. I would love to know the cause--then a cure. Good luck to you and let us know what brings you relief!Becky

Klonopin has helped me a lot more than Ativan. If your doctor approves, try one. It works in a few hours. If you don't get significant relief, then I wouldn't continue taking it but if it makes a huge difference then you can weigh the pros and cons with your doctor.

HiUnfortunately we dont no the trigger but we all have our own theory. I think my body was taken over by aliens and they are living inside ;) ;) Try not to think it's something more than annoying muscle twitching. Don't let the anxiety take over and wreck your life. Keep fit, get medical assistance if necessary for cramping/pain etc, and if need be see your doctor about the anxiety its causing.I think the biggest thing is carrying on push your way through this, this site and all the people on in who twitch just prove that it's nothing sinister.Good luckSharon

My inquiries on causes suggest it may be autoimmune antibodies that irritate the nerves. These antibodies could be triggered by a virus or other random things that activate the immune system. It could also be hereditary. There is an hereditary condition called CMT that causes demyelination which can cause twitching. This is a very common condition and many people have such a mild form they never know they have it until someone in their family gets a bad case and they do genetic testing familywide. My neuro suggested I could have it but said insurance companies don't pay for testing and it's not treatable anyway or at least the cause isn't treatable. These are just some theories that are out there with a decent amount of evidence to back them up.
