Have any of you out thier had to have muscle biopsey? If you did what was the results. I read on this web site that it can show mild neurogenic changes anyone know what kind of miner neurogenic changes. I was diagnosed with bfs after emg of my rigth arm 2 weeks later emg of my left legg and on july 7 an emg of both lags and left arm along with nerve conductive studies and 3 neuro exams all wiyh in the last 4 months symtoms are twitching cramps muscle pain and that is diffuse twitching and cramps and muscle pain everywhere most notable on my feet. one neuro suggest muscle biopsey after i told him about numbness in forearm and feet. The biopsey came back with mild neurogenic atrophy and he is not bothered by this at all but he also couldn't ell me if this was related to bfs. I am still concerned he wants to moniter the situation for the next year. Any one out there with more information. Do you think after 3 exams and emg along with clean mri that all is ok. Also i did have a fluctuated cpk from 147 at rest to 260 without rest.

They emg'ed half you body and then did a muscle biospy what the heck did they biopsy. The mild neurogenic atrophy could or could not be something to worry about, hopefully the doc was smart enough to biopsy an area that was not recently emg'ed or an area that was not recently bruised, if they did do an area with bruising or recent emg that could affect the results. If your doctor is not worried I would not worry. They do not make it a practice of doing biopsy on patients with negative emgs unless you have some clinical signs, how did the come to decide on a biopsy.

Kerry- the last emg was 5 weeks prior to the biopsey. The only thing that came out bad was my cpk it was slightly high for 4 test and in range for two of the test. i don't think the dr.s know much about bfs. If I would have known some of the information from this site prior to biopsey I probaly wouldn't have even had it done. The dr. wanted to have it done after he knew i was having numbness. I have had nueros tell me i have bfs but none could explain symtoms except for muscle twitching.
thanks for your reply.

Well if that biopsy was done in the a limb that had emg 5 weeks prior, that is not good, the emg does not do major damage but of course there is a little bruising of the muscle, if you look anywhere you will find that doctors warns against doing a biopsy on a muscle that was recently bruised or emg'ed.

I had all the same tests you did and also had slightly high CPK. The neuro (who seems very competent to me and spoke extensively about BFS during my first visit) mentioned a muscle biopsy but said he didn't think it warrented unless I began experiencing weakness or other new symptoms. Said he would like to check in a year and see how I am doing just to be safe but he is 99.9% sure it is BFS and therefore a waste of money and time to do biopsy. Sounds like it is just a matter of the individual doctor's approach and that your situation is similar to mine. I definitely think after all your tests you can put your mind at ease despite the biopsy. After all, all this twitching etc. does have some effect on the muscles even if it is BFS. It is not surprising to show changes on CPK levels or biopsy results.
