MRI Scan - Time & Results?

Just wondering what to expect, how long do they usually last (I'm having a brain and spine one) how long before you get the results? Any comments appreciated.

Sandra,

Mine took about 1.5 hours. They did it without and with contrast die. It's, of course, painless and even relaxing. I meditated through it.

Results come very quickly if something is wrong - like two days they will call. For me over a week went by and I got a card in the mail stating all was normal.

You may start to worry about the results and think you have a brain tumor or something. I highly suggest you don't go down that road. You will be fine.

Hi Saundra, The MRI is nothing to worry about its probably going to take
about 45 minutes depending on what all they are taking pictures of and
if your having it done with contrast wich is the dye maybe a little longer
and if its open MRI or closed. I had three closed MRIs that just means its
done by sending you in a tunnle your closed in but its not bad just a bit
noisey they gave me ear plugs to put in to help with that. after I had it
done it took me four days to get the results. You can handle it its an easy
one :) good luck.

The MRI is a piece of cake. I had one of my brain and cervical spine, with and without contrast (with constrast they put a small injection of fluid into your arm, completely painless). It took about an hour and sometimes they give you little headphones to listen to music. My 12 year old daughter had to have one a year ago for a knee injury and she did fine also so don't worry. My 15 year old just had one of her brain this summer (all was fine thank goodness) and she actually fell asleep in the machine.

As Mark indicated, if they find something, you will hear back very quickly. When my sister-in-law had one this summer, she got a call in literally 4 hours from the time of her test because they found something (a benign tumor in her spine. She was operated on and is now fine and getting ready to return to work as a teacher.

I had mine on a Sunday morning in July and didn't hear anything started to worry (as Mark said). I called my neuro's office by that following Tuesday, they got back to me Wednesday morning and said all was normal except a slightly bulging disk between c6 and c7 which is around the area where we all hunch over slightly when when on the computer and I am a two pillow sleeper so my head is always tilted up slightly when I sleep. They told me it was very mild and is very commom, as most people never even know they have a slight one.

Try the meditation tactic, especially if they give you music to listen to.

Relax, everything will be fine. Let us know how things go.

saundra..
I first want to say that I hope your results are negative. I am surprised though that you have never had an MRI
The previous replies pretty much sum it up. The great thing about it is that this does not have all that nasty radiation like conventional x-ray.

all the best

Saundra,

I am very claustrophobic too. I let them know and requested an Open MRI. It is open on all sides pretty much. You will just feel a liitle uneasy when they bring the coil on top of you. I had my wife holding my hands for a brief time and relaxed me.

My doctor also asked me to take some Xanax (anti-aniety medicine) about half an hour prior. I took half a pill and helped me a little.

You will be fine, if you take your husband along.

Good luck

I am claustrophopic as well and so is my older daughter. She cannot even stand to be in big crowds. If you just keep your eyes closed and relax, you will not even realize you are in it, or as mentioned above, they may let you have an open one. I did not know they could actually do that.

Good luck and keep us posted.
