Middle-aged Low Back Pathology

twitch me, hello, hope your back is feeling better. It's very interesting to look at data and see patients with back problems. Studies have shown that many, about half, of middle ages people (35-65) have some sort of pathology in the low back on MRI scans. Interestingly enough, many if not most of these people have no leg or back problems. Some patients will have pain, numbness, tingling, etc.. and have very little showing on MRI scans, where as others will have little pain and the scans look terrible. Need to treat the patient and not the scan, in my opinion, so I would look further with perhaps emg studies or CT Myelograms....As usuall I recommend aggressive physical therapy focusing on core stability and extension type programs, weight loss and general fitness as a first line defense.....Good Luck....

My neuro initially prescribed physical therapy. I was dismissed after about 1.5 months to do the exercises at home. I have not been as diligent as I should be.

My neuro indicated that major nerve impingements would have been picked up on EMG. He said there are lots of little nerves that perhaps not but does not think that is the root of my problem either way. I am sure he said something more technical but that was my take away.
