Mg+ and Potassium Test Results

Well, I had an extracellular minerals test. This is different than a blood test, they scrape the back of the tongue to break open some cells and measure whats in and around them.My Mg+ was normal...I was slightly surprised by this. But my potassium was low. Not terribly low, but low enough for my doc to put me on an extended release K pill called Potassium CL 20MEQ ER Tablets. I take one a day.Low Potassium can cause lots of my twitching and other symptoms. I also have had PVC's (heart palpitations) for years.I just started, but I thought I would let all of you know.Scott

2 years ago I was hospitalized for low potassium and had to be taken to e.r by ambulance and I was also on the XR potassium pills alont with a potassium drip I.V I was told to follow up with my regular M.D but I never did. This makes me highly curious- I already made a decision tomorrow I am going to make a appt with a Endocronoligst and have ALL my blood checked. I have already std/hiv panels , thyroid etc but now you mentioned potassium that makes me wonder. I never had it corrected or checked again.I read something about low potassium channels causing twitching is this connected???Lovely

I've had markedly low potassium as well. I think I once read that peripheral nerve excitability can be caused by the receptors of potassium not doing their job correctly. It was just another theory thrown out there I think...

Well I said as of midnight January 1st 2009 I will no longer have BFS or ALS in my vocabulary. So as I start back to nursing (assisted living, hospice care) January 5th I have to have a full on physical so I got in with a Internist tomorrow morning at 830. I spoke to the nurse and explained I wanted a physical and a FULL PANEL of every blood test ran on me known to man kind. I spoke of having and being hospitalized with low potassium a few years ago, heck I think two years ago but never followed up so tomorrow I requested I have Lymes, heavy metals and ALL the vitamins check! 100% of me wants something like b12 or iron to come back abnormal so I can put a finger on something then again if I am declared healthy- I'lll be blessed  My irons always low, I guess Im just used to it by now. Oh well this is my last adventure to a doc before the end of 2008 and my new year 2009 where BFS and ALS will no longer exist in my mind. I do believe a YEAR has been enough!Lovely

I am very interested in these results. Because I have also read that BFS can be caused by the potasium channel used by the nerves not working correctly.Though recently I have not been feeling to bad so I have not been following up. I have a bunch of bloodwork I can do.My solution to BFS has been Tegretol and time. Between the two I feel better.Though I should really follow up on this blood work. But I have been traveling, it is snowing, my kids are at home...Merry Christmas one and all.-43RichyThe43rd

Scott - It's been a few days, have you noticed any difference? Did your GP do these tests for you? (I'm not up to date on anybody's story as I have been gone for a while.) I did take Potassium for a week or so when I was desperate and it did seem to help with the amplitude of symptoms - I still had them but they seemed less severe. Also the b6 and b1 seemed to help with healing when I was having lots of bad spasms (less recurrence in the same area).43RichyThe43rd - Reach those toes yet? Happy Holidays everyone and best wishes and health for the New Year!
