Magnesium for Twitching Relief?

Many of you talk about magnesium helping with the twitching and I am trying to find out what kind to take and how much and when to take it. I have a bottle of Magnesium Citrate - 150mg caplets, which I have yet to take.

Is this the right type of magnesium and how much should I be taking?

Thanks so much.

I cant say for sure on what type of magnesium to take for BFS. But , I do take a magnesium supplement prescribed by my cardiologist for atrial fibrillation. He has me taking 400 to 500 mg's of magnesium Oxide a day.
Magnesium Oxide is supposed to help with nerve conduction. Since atrial fib as well as BFS are both a hyper-excitability disorder of sorts, I would give the Manesium Oxide a chance. Again i was prescribed 4 to 5 hundred milligrams a day. You may also ask your neurologist what he would suggest. If in fact you are seeing one. Good luck to ya
P.S Not only do i have Atrial Fib, I have also been diagnosed with BFS. So, I am a fellow sufferer

I had forgotten to mention to you that high doses of magnesium can have a laxative effect. Im glad Metta informed you of that in her/his post.

Teri, you are fortunate to have a physician who recognizes the value of magnesium for cardiac issues! Since magnesium is indispensible for so many metabolic functions, it makes sense that if it helps the heart muscle, it might also help with twitchy BFS muscles, no?! :D)

Mark, with a quick search on "magnesium" in this forum, you may also find more dosage recommendations from other folks. I actually spent some time looking at this myself yesterday, and one person reported taking 400-600mgs/day:

...and here's another related post that describes good success using organic magnesium compounds:

Finally, FWIW, you may also begin to see that when folks say magnesium did NOT help them, they were usually taking lower doses, and they were not using an organic or ionic form of magnesium:

Thanks so much for the replies - this is all very helpful and I will be doing a lot of reading up on all this. There are so many different kinds of magnesium.

Once again, thanks a million for your replies.

God Bless, Mark
