I was skimming through the latest book by Dr. Andrew Weil that is on the bookshelves right now. In one part of the book he talks about some ultra endurnace athletes in their thirties in Arizona who came down with that very bad disease. He theorized that nervous tissue is made up of a specialized type of lipid (fat). High endurance athletes typically have very low body fat. He suggests that perhaps in these individuals toxins that are fat soluble accumulate in the nervous tissue instead of being distributed in the fat of a person with an average body fat percentage. When this is coupled with the oxidative stress of intense physical activity in may set the stage for the development of that bad disease.
In a way he is basically saying that intense physical activity may be good from a cardiovascular standpoint but may be harmful to the nervous system when taken to the extreme.
I tried to paraphrase what I remember reading and thought it was important to share with anyone interested.
Thanks,
