Looking for Advice About Numbness

Hello everyone...I have been lurking on this site for a while and was needing someone else's advice. Here is my story...In October of 2002, I woke up from a nap to find my right foot tingling. No big deal, happened before just laying wrong. So I went to bed and woke up the next morning with the foot still kinda numb. I then noticed my whole body feeling wierd. I had just started running alot and thought that maybe I had over did it. Anyway, the wierd feeling moved from my right foot/leg to my right arm, left arm, then left leg. At this point I got concerned although I didn't notice twitches at the time I did get the pins/needles feeling. I immediately looked on the net and found references to MS/ALS. I then went to my primary doctor, who got me in for an MRI. She also mentioned ALS. Well, the MRI of the brain,C-spine, and L-spine came back fine except a slight bulging disk at l4-l5. That gave me relief, but didn't explain the upper limbs being affected. I accepted the dx of stess from exercising more and the bulging disc and tried to not worry. Well, a couple days went by and I started noticing the wierd feelings were accompanied by twitches, most of which would come and go and seemed to be rythmic. These were in my calfs, bottom of feet, biceps, and thighs. So, I went back to the primary who sent me to a neuro. I also had blood work done which all came back normal. The neuro did the basic exam..balance, walking on toes/heels, strength. Everything seemed fine she said and she claimed to be very familiar with ALS. She did find ulner compression in my right elbow by performing an emg. Again, I felt better that the neuro was not bothered by any of my symptoms(she didn't see any FASC.), so I must be fine. She never actually called it BFS either but I figured that was the same as "nothing". I have also been through the anxiety spill and been on welbutrin for a couple of months, but stopped it since it didn't help the twitching. Now that brings me up to date. I have pretty much accepted the twitching as no big deal(hopefully just BFS), but I am very sensitive to EVERYTHING that happens to my body. Everytime I get a cramp or ache I worry is it MS or ALS. If I am running on my treadmill and kinda stumble (just one step during a 2 mile run) I think "is this foot drop?". Just recently I have been diagnosed with chronic sinusitis and started taking claritin to help clear up the sinuses. Yesterday, all of a sudden I got dizzy. I could still walk but felt light headed, especially after bending over and back up. I immediately thought MS again, even though I know dizziness is a side effect of claritin and part of chronic sinusitus. I know this has been long, but I would appreciate your opinions. Here is a list of the symptoms I have experienced: twitching everywhere, tingling arms and legs(seem to "fall asleep" faster that before), slight cramping feeling in arches of feet and other parts of body including hands and forearms, crawling sensations, floater in right eye(only vision symptom), finger twitches from time to time, and now dizziness(hopefully will go away soon). Can I leave all this to BFS or should I consider MS/ALS/FIBRO? I don't seem to be very fatigued and haven't lost any strength. Also, how conclusive is an MRI for detecting MS? I've read 90-95%. Thanks for taking the time to read my story...

So weird....

I could have written this post. EXACTLY how mine started, tingling upon awakening from a nap in my arm, then it spread all over for several days, then the twitching set in...I have chronic sinusitis also. And dizziness...Yes you have BFS.

I'm still twitching after 5 years, but I don't worry about it much now. You'll learn to live with it, too, hopefully sooner than later. Don't waste too much time on it though.

BTW, are you on any antibiotics for your sinusitis? If so, which ones? Or just Claritin? I had mine forever before I finally went to an ENT and got on long term antibiotics. It still comes and goes, mostly in the winter with the heater on...Lots of people here have complained of sinus infections as being a precursor to their BFS. I wonder if there is any connection? Some speculate (esp. Gary) that there is a connection btw. a certain class of antibiotics and BFS (flouroquinolones).

Well anyway....Welcome to BFS world. Glad you found us. It's a lot more tolerable knowing you aren't alone, isn't it?

Firstly, sensory symptoms are NOT part of ALS and I think it was irresponsible of your doctor to bring that up based on exactly NOTHING to indicate it!

If anything your symptoms would be more similar to those of MS but you had a clear MRI and the symptoms you describe can also be caused by anxiety - I had pretty much everything to mention at the start of this.

Sinus infections can also be pretty nasty and may well explain the dizziness etc. A lot of people get dizzy from the bending over business, or standing up from a chair - I do.

Take comfort from the fact you had a clean neuro exam and try to pay less attention to your body. I know it's hard but being hypervigilant only makes you worry more - you notice all sorts of things you never did before - believe me I've been there :)
