Long-Term Symptoms: 2.5 Years

I have had varying symptoms for almost 2.5 years now. It started out with a single twitch in my right index finger. It soon spread to body wide twitches even in the tongue with a few muscle cramps in my leg. About 2 years ago i had to move a sofa and after walking about 1000 ft my left arm felt tired. I then had buzzing for the first summer in my left leg. All those symptoms have disappered over the last 6 to 8 months. I had an MRI and EMG last January that both came back negative. Everything was good until last week when I hurt my lower back and was doing exercise in which i'm lying on my stomach pushing upward to put my back into extension mode. As i got to my 6 or 7th rep i felt that tired achy feeling in the left arm 2 years later. I went to physio yesterday and he said the strength in both arms are even maybe the left being a little stronger. So i think i'm ok just a little nervous. I had all this put behind me until last week and now i'm concerned again. Any thoughts? I dont think it's ALS after 2.5 years and all the symptoms gone?

With the symptoms you describe and the time that has passed you absolutely do not have any reason to worry about ALS.I think you should be joyous that your symptoms disappeared over the last 6 to 8 months before starting to return. Perhaps they will disappear again and not come back :)

I have a lot of arm pain as well, except it's my right arm. The pain comes and goes also, and I never had problems with it before the BFS stuff.ALS shouldn't even be on your radar. You may just be having a flareup.Check out Fjordian's posts, he has a lot of arm symptoms too.Hope you feel.better.Jay

As Jay said you can read my previous posts, it started (now about 8 months ago) with lots of (extreme) issues in both my arms. I didn't have those issues before it all started. It's better now although I still have issues and flare ups, some weeks are better than others... but I get used to it ;) You should not be concerned, worried or thinking of ALS. In ALS symptoms do not come and go, in ALS weakness sets in, stays and migrates from there. So try to relax and enjoy life ;) greetz, Fjordian

Hi everybody,I still have the arm pain which goes from the elbow area to the shoulder. It seems to intensify and then ease off somewhat. I think i've heard stories similiar with BFS. I don't think i should worry about ALS which i do from time to time. I had issues now 2.5 years and had a clean EMG last January so i guess i should relax and move on. Any thoughts or advice? Is there anything or exercises or meds i could take to help things? Thanks and Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year.

You shouldn't worry too much as you are in for 2.5 years now and had a clean EMG in January.i'm a little reluctant regarding taking meds but this is what helps for me (somewhat):hot shower/bath, sauna, (arm)stretching excersises, calcium/b vitamin supplements, fysiotherapy.Merry Xmas and Happy New Year for you too ;)

So it is unlikely after this time as well as the symptoms i've had in the 2.5 years seem to come and go from various parts of the body that it's anything serious like ALS. BFS can aggravate at times but in my case so far it not been to bad. It never prevents from doing anything unlike my lower back at times. THanks.

Yep, it's very unlikely, in ALS symptoms do not come and go and after 2.5 years you would have noticed if something was serious wrong with you.

Blue123rd, is there any stiffness with the pain? I am having a lot of left arm pain as well and stiffness too. I have only been having symptoms for about 5 weeks now, but have a lot of stiffness in my left arm that waxes and wanes over the course of the day.

Hi Dave,Yes i have stiffness in my left arm. My physio thinks its from sitting at a computer for years and very little exercise. The strenght seems ok but it just aches almost like a nerve impingement. Some days are better than others.

I'm really getting concerned with the arm pain this time. It's been like 3 weeks constant and before it would be 2 or 3 days wherever on my body the pain would be. There was a time last summer when i felt great twitches stopped for the most part, clean EMG and MRI last January. I figured after 2.5 years whatever it was wasn't too bad and i should be fine. Funny thing is it all started as a twitch in the calf of my right hand index finger and i,m having issues in the left arm. I feel like my world is going to crumble. The strenght seems as good as ever but it pains and aches somewhat. I may contact my Neurologist again if it doesnt go away. Can BFS cause this ? I thoughht for sure I had BFS where things would come and then go and not come back like i had leg cramps in my right leg 2 years ago for about a week or so and never had any since. So thinking about that I figued i was fine. I hope i'm right.
