Living With BFS and Atrophy

Hello all-So I have went from total freak out on this board to devoting lots of time helping people with bfs. My background is basically fear, emgs, multiple neuros and diagnosed with bcfs (cramps). I haveone leg that I thought had atrophy, my right soleus muscle below my calf is basically not there. My neuro said its probably because air drove a car with a clutch and my left leg developed more mass. So I'm good with that. My big hang up now is my thumb muscle. If I pull my thumb back I have dents in the muscle on my dominant hand. The other hand has no dents, just smooth muscle. True this could be due to it being my dominant hand, but its pretty concerning to me. I will try to post some pics, if I can figure it out. What's weird is its near the wrist but not on the palm..more on the edge. Let me try to post some pics and see what you guys think =)

Relax Sean, I have the same thing. I know exactly the dents you are talking about. If you look at a diagram of the thenar muscles, you will see that your dent is actually a natural gap between two small muscles. I'll try to find a diagram for you.-MattTry this. Hopefully the link works. Just notice the grooves in between the small muscles of the hand. I bet this is what you are calling a "dent":

So sorry you are having a relapse....Just wanted to drop in and say...You cant have atrophy without loss of function...just not possible...think about it...If you have full function..there is no way those dents are atrophy :D)

Muscle "dents" are a matter of form versus function. There are lots of reasons a muscle changes appearance over time, from slow loss of mass due to aging or reduced use to a change in the surrounding tissue, particularly subcutaneous fat, that makes the muscle "appear" dented, more or less prominent, or altered in shape. As MommyLondon said, if the function hasn't changed, then there's little to worry about. Even with atrophy, for instance from having a calf in a cast after breaking a tibia or fibula, you'll still have full function (if reduced strength). So again, nothing in particular to worry about.

Thanks guys for the replies. Can you take a look at my new post, I put up some pictures. I guess I just want you to see what I was talking about. It's probibly just my dominant hand, but I am still concerned.

Lots of people have that dent, and even if they didn't there is no reason to worry. SOrry you are having a relapse, having been through all of this you should know that this stuff cannot turn into ALS. Concentrate on the facts, and try not to focus on how your body looks or feels.

Thanks everyone-I think it's amazing that I have had non stop twitching for a little over 6 years now (really noticed my first thumper in late 2005). I guess when I have flare ups I am one of the "atrophy watchers" and I keep checking my hands and legs for atrohpy. I have an appointment with my neuro on 04/11 to discuss this burning pain I get down my shoulder to my bicept and arm, i'm sure he will do another exam and I will post what he says here. Sean
