Is GERD Connected to Tongue Twitching?

Just a question for all you tongue twitchers out there... do you also have GERD issues? This is a shot in the dark but I'm wondering if the reason some of us have tongue twitching and others don't is maybe because our Vagus nerve is being irritated due to GERD issues. With BFS, all of our nerves seem to be hyperexcited and easily irritated. Maybe our heartburn issues are irritating the vagus nerve and causing our tongue to twitch. Just a thought. My tongue is out of control lately. I have a tugging twitch in the left middle section of my tongue that has been constant for 2 straight days. I get tongue twitches every day, very frequently, but never as constant as they have been the last couple days and I sometimes feel like I'm losing my mind. They are so distressing and frustrating.I can also feel flickers on both sides, way in the back, and even underneath. I'm going on a GERD diet and will be taking Mylanta twice a day to see if it has any effect on my tongue twitching. I notice that I get a lot more tongue stuff on the weekends for some reason. I'm wondering if its because I eat a lot of fried food and drink beer on the weekends. Hmmmm. So what do you tongue twitchers think? Is this just a shot in the dark?-Matt

Matt, I have battled with GERD since I was 18 or so...count me in for 15 years of this stuff. I have used everything under the sun to control it, and while it gives me temporary relief, the GERD always comes back. I had some testing done 10 years ago and was told I do have a hiatal hernia, didn't have insurance back then and never investigated it further. When I was in my "dying of everything" phase the two years before BFS started, I saw a cardiologist for my heart palps. Lots of PVCs and PACs, which he put me on a beta blocker for..but also mentioned that many of his patients told him they never had the palps before the GERD started. I found this interesting. Seems GERD causes or contributes to more things then one would think. I notice an increase in my tongue twitching/sensory symptoms after a night of drinking, and all over my body for that matter. Drinking causes a BIG increase in my GERD symptoms...I don't think it's a shot in the dark. Sounds like a plausible theory to me. Frances

I dont know what GERD means (could you explain?), but I do have tongue twitches. Not every day, but I do sometimes. And not only that, app. 2 days per month my tongue tingels - on top or on sides. Its really freaking me out. Its like I am feeling smtn on my tongue. However, lately I also get internal shaking od my lower body at night - its like I can hear inner shaking, but its invisible from the outside. Super strange!

GERD means Gastroesophageal reflux disease...basically it's when you have chronic acid reflux from your stomach. It's pretty common. I have this and I take PPIs off and on to treat it.Matt you know I don't have tongue twitches (although I fully expect them at some point), but I do have GERD and interestingly enough I was diagnosed with gastroparesis last year (possibly indicating some issue with my vagus nerve). To be clear to newbies - this is part of the autonomic nervous system and has nothing to do with MND or anything horrible...it's quite common. It seems to have cleared up recently but I just thought that was interesting. I feel like our nervous systems are just out of wack in general. =\

Matt,I totally have acid reflux. Whether it's GERD or not, I don't know - because I don't have heartburn, just acid reflux (I have had it most of my life to be honest). And, my tongue twitches on occasion. It's pretty rare, but it does happen.I personally think it's probably the beer causing your tongue to twitch more. I usually have some drinks on the weekend, and I twitch so much worse after drinking than the rest of the week. I think it just makes your electrolytes out of whack, and then you just twitch more. But, I'm very interested in hearing what your anti-GERD diet does for you! At the very least it should help with GERD, right?Mitra

I sometimes wonder how many people who think they have GERD really have Gastritus (inflammation of the lining of the stomach), but unless you get an endoscopy the doctors always call it GERD. Matt I totally agree that a GERD diet would be helpful. I am now symptom (and medicine) free and have been for the last 4 months. Frances, I also wonder if there are some people who think they are having heart palpitations but are actually having eosophageal/ stomack spasms. Just think BFS in your stomach and esophogus. Would that not feel like some kind of heart palpitations?

Matt, Yes ive been a sufferer on and off since i was quite young and about 3 years ago was dx hiatus hernia and inflammation of the esophagus given lansoprazole ppi which i found marvelous to rid the pain and since reading recently ppi cannot be good long term i wont take them anymore and just trying a homeopathic remedy or rennies ....also i suffer from tachycardia palpitations and ectopics ....and been tongue twitchin for about 3 months every day ......also altered taste and odd sensations on it....Vagus nerve irritation sound poss to me......
