How to Perform Heel Toe Test

Walk in a straight line, one foot in front of the other. For instance, when you take a step, place the foot that is going to hit the ground directly in front of the other foot (the foot that is already on the ground) so that the toes are touching the heel of the foot in front.

Does this make sense?

In otherwords, pretend you are walking on a high wire (like a tightrope walker) and as you take a step; bring your foot down directly in front of the other foot.

I hope this helps; I am terrible at descriptions!

There are two tests that involve heel/toes. One is tandem walking as Ginny describes above where you walk in a straight line, placing one foot closely in front of the other. The other test, heel toe walking is first walking a few steps on your heels, then wallking a few steps on your toes.

The first test is for cerabellar function and the second will also show weakness of the foot extensor/flexor muscles. A good one for testing weakness.
