Hoarseness and ***: What Causes It?

I will NOT allow myself to go digging around on google anymore. I am curious though, for some possible peace of mind...With ***, what CAUSES the hoarseness and the lump in the throat feeling? I know that I have reflux and I know that I have sinus problems. I also know that both conditions, as well as my TMJ, can cause hoarseness and globus sensations. Would hoarseness with *** be worse at night? Would it be accompanied, or caused by sinus drainage or does it just happen with no obvious reason (like drainage). The hoarseness clears up if I clear my throat...at least for a little bit. It is almost always accompanied by sinus drainage...which is bad right now. The lump in the throat is worse after eating. It is also worse, sometimes, when I lie down. It feels (and I know this is gross and TMI) like I have to give a giant burp (which I could not do to save my life anyway). I've actually gotten sick sometimes because of the sinus crap and the reflux (burp feeling) issues. I have days that are better than others and of course it is all worse when I start to get worried about it.Thanks...Jess

Hi JessAll ALS symptoms, including those of bulbar palsy, are caused by denervation, i.e. the nerve signal doesn't transfer into the muscle so the muscle stops working. So any ALS symptom, including voice and throat changes are NOT intermittent, which contrasts with your own symptoms which vary according to eating/ posture etc... Your known medical conditions, to which you refer in your email, would easily account for your symptoms as far as I understand.RegardsSimon

In the fact, ALS patients can have slightly better or slightly worse days, but its very mild change - from the disccusion of the annual neurology concilium its just because the rest of "healthy" muscles can be one day more tired from previous day and the result is worse speaking, next day it is slightly better.Anyway, lump in the throat is classic sign of stress/anxiety, bulbar palsy usually starts with troubles with speaking, later eating and chewing. I had this concerns too, one year ago, and it disappeared when I stopped to research more and just lived.
