I have a question hope someone can help me please. I have been to this site alot but not for a long time.I started twitching 3ys ago but it has gotten better over the years. I have had every test known and nothingI had 3 EMGs normal. Here is the Question I have a Buldging disc in my neck putting pressue effect on my thecal sac whatever that is, but anyway I have been having problems with my left arm it gives out on me when I use it alot or carry heavy things it shakes like crazy I have to rest it for awhile for it to be normal again soI have been in PT for it. My orthopedic doctor recomended an EMG so I got one today and have been freaking outwhen the DR. told me the results it showed positive sharp Waves and Fibs on my left side my neck I said thats bad he saidit meant that there was nerve irritation. I asked him if it was you know cause he had my history he said it could be comimgfrom my neck has anyone else ever had this? I am freaking out I have only known fibs and sharp waves to be nothing butbad and to have both I am so scared he did not see any fascics though. Am I done for? He told me he didnt see ALS so dontworry but I cant stop and I thought I was past the worry part . Thank you,Anna lee

Fibs and sharp waves are seen for all sorts of things. We only concentrate on the bad stuff because we twitch. If you've been twitching for 3 years and this is your only problem then you don't have you know what. What did the neurologist say? He said you had nerve irritation, but what did he tell you to do about it?

I dont even know if he is a neuro but thats all he dose is EMGs. My orthopedic doctor sent me to have it donebecause I have a severe disk Buldge in my neck. He told me not to worry that my muscles are fine it was just that one area in my neck he said. And he said it was borderline. I asked him how often he sees it he said all the time. The part that scares me to death is the fact that I twitch but he said it has nothing to do with that he says that itcorrelates with my neck problem. But now my mind keeps wondering and I have that sick pit in my stomach. I hopehe is right. Thank you for your response.Anna lee

Sorry, I forgot to add that he wants me to get a epidural injection. He told me to discuss it with my orthoI have an apt next friday. The only other thing is surgery he said try to avoid it.Anna lee

I know it's really tough, but these two things are unrelated. Heck, I got a cold and became hoarse and decided I had bulbar ALS. This BFS thing makes us think in odd ways. Trust your doctor. Bulging discs are not hard to diagnose and would cause the EMG findings you mentioned. Your 3 years of twitching is way too long for it to be anything but benign.

A bulging disc in your neck could easily put pressure on the nerve that feeds your left arm. If the irritation is sufficiently bad, it could cause the nerve to start to degenerate. This would show up as fibs and PSWs. It's not MND—it's localized to the site of mechanical irritation (the disc in your neck), and won't spread. This sort of problem is quite common. Carpal tunnel can cause weakness and atrophy that would be visible in the same way on the EMG. The signs you saw are diagnostic for a nerve problem but, as you mentioned, the cause is almost certainly your neck problem, not a neuro disease.

My husband has had an epidural injection because of degenerate disc disease. Was with him at the ortho yesterday and his left foot (toe area) was obviously weaker than his right, doctor mentioned it and we saw it. He said it was the disc disease & my husband isn't in the least bit concerned, (only whether it's finally time to bite the bullet & have surgery). Now, I would have totally freaked out if it were me because of my fascs. I've had BFS for years and never had an EMG. I'm pretty sure, at this point, it would show something because I have arthritis in both my neck and lower back & have worked all day at computers for 15 years, and feel like I have carpel tunnel. I'll avoid an EMG if possible, because, like yours, I'd be shocked if mine didn't show some changes due to something else, but I would read something horrible into it, (at least briefly until I talked myself down.) You've had BFS for a long time, trust the professionals when they tell you that it's due to something else. By the way the epidual injection helped my husband for a couple of years, (although it takes some time before you feel the full results.) He's been in construction for over 40 years, and 2 dics are degenerated, hence the nerve damage and muscle weakness. He's looking forward to surgery so he can be back to "abusing his back"! You're fine----Best Regards, Denise
