Hi allI really dont know if i am going crazy here or not and really need some advice. As you know for the past 8 weeks i have been twitching in my calfs. As a result of which sometimes when i walk it get a sore, crampy feeling in my calfs. This sometimes makes me walk funny as i try not to put all the pressure on my feet as i dont wanna feel the soreness and make me think of A*L. So as a result of which i do this sub consiously and people tell me i am limping. This then inturn makes me panic even more. I can when i force myself walk fine and i have no problems really. So my question is.....do i have a proper gait problem that could be attributed to A*L? or is the fact i can correct it mean its not true gait? i mean is true gait where you can not correct it?I hope all that made sense....Chris

Chris,Did you have an EMG? Strength OK? If so you are OK.BFS will mess with your calf and when you have calf pain, especially cramps, yes your walk will change.Just make sure the EMG doesn't show any nerve block because of a herniated disk. Because that will also cause a gait change. If so, I recommend an operation to remove the pressure on the nerve.-43RichyThe43rd

No have not had an EMG or anything yet, my first appointment is not until 18th November (3 weeks today) i am worried because most people say that a Neuro can see as soon as you walk in if you have A*L, so if i walk in with my limp then .....oh god this is awful and i am sick of it

Hey Chris,Gait problems associated to diseases are uselles very extreme. You would not be able to walk even when you wanted to.Also, gait problems are most of the time drop foots. If you can walk on your heels (which you aalready said you can), then you are clean.Your problem is pain, and pain = no **SHang on there!

Here is a simple test for you. Walk across the floor on your tip toes. Now turn around and walk back on you heels. If you had true ALS weakness you could not do this task.I've have "weak" feelings in my legs a number of times to the point I felt like I could barely support my body and was going to fall down. This went away for a time, then went away then came back and so on. You dont have much longer to go until your Dr. appointment. I recommend wrting down all your questions and taking the list out while you talking to the docotr because if you dont you'll get caught up in the moment and forget to ask something and be kicking yourself afterwards. Take care

By the way chris; pain in the leg makes you walk different. You focus on the pain and try not to stand on your injured leg so much to reduce the pain; thus, creating a unnatural walk. This with your fear of ALS makes you freak out.. because we are oversensitive. Especially in the early stages.

Hi againI have just tried walking on my heels, fine no problem, then i tried walking on my tip toes, again no problem HOWEVER, when i walk on my tip toes i can feel my right calf (the one that twitches the most) pulling and then when i have done the walking it feels sore and twitches like crazy. I will probably feel this for a few days now. Anyone else had this when they self test??Chris

Of course. That's called the "this is an exercise I don't do very often" pain. You'd run into the same problem if you suddenly tried to do the splits or walk on two hands. And the twitching afterwards is just exercise intolerance. That's your muscles saying STOP DOING THAT, WE'RE TIRED!

You cant correct ALS. If your walking funny because of leg muscle weakness you couldnt put your mind to it and correct it..Its not your brain giving out its your muscles...and nerves. You can't command something that cant work to do right. Ya think? ;)
