Has Anyone Else Noticed Hand Muscle Size Difference?

Awhile ago, I realized that the muscle on the top of my hand, between my thumb and index finger, appeared larger on my non dominant hand. Now, I notice that it is definitely bigger on my dominant hand. I don't know if my muscle has shrunk in my left hand, or just gotten larger in my right hand. Does anyone here have larger muscle in their dominant hand...the particular muscle I'm referring to is the one on the top of the hand between the index and thumb.

Oh, and one more thing. When I'm doing my daughter's hair, I use these tiny claw clips. I have no problem holding them open with my right hand, but I'm experiencing trouble opening them all the way with my left thumb and index finger. I'm freaking out!

That area is certainly larger for my right hand than my left, and I'm righthanded. If I remember correctly, I was quite anxious and posted about what i thought was both atrophy and weakness in that area more than a year ago. Btw, my right hand is more coordinated, stronger and "faster" than my left, something I think is quite usual for the dominant hand. I'm sure that holding claw clips with a non-dominant hand in the way you describe is difficult for the majority:)

You are fine. Asymmetry of limbs is the norm. When you have atrophy you don't go..."hmm, I wonder, is that bigger?" you go "WTF is happening?" Atrophy is startling and can not be missed. I have a similar experience to you with clips. That's right, even though I'm a man, I love putting clips in my hair. What? It makes me feel pretty. Actually, what I was going to say was that when I'm at the gym, and need to put these little clips on the bar in order that weights don't slip off, it is so much easier with my right hand. I've yelled at my left to stop being such a panty-waist, but it's no use. :( So, you are fine. Celebrate with a coffee and cinnamon roll and then come here and tell us about it. MMmm, that way we can all live vicariously off of the calories that you ingest. :D) Basso

Thanks guys. Basso...is one of your hand muscles bigger than the other? The whole reason I'm concerned is because I know that less than a month ago, that muscle was bigger on my left hand, because I was taking note how I found it odd that I could barely see that muscle on my right hand when put in certain positions. What are the chances that that particular muscle just built itself up?

I would never recommend giving more than a passing thought to anything but the most undeniable, totally abnormal signs regarding the neuromuscular system. The subtle things are just impossible to interpret and have no meaning at the subtle level. I'll give you a recent example from my life. A fellow teacher is a Star Trek fan and is leaving to teach for two years in Japan. Another teacher wanted to send him away with a gift to remember us with so she had everyone at the school make the "live long and prosper" sign as she photographed them. The sign involves making a "V" by squeezing your pinkie and ring finger together while also squeezing your index and middle finger together. When I did this, my fingers were a tiny bit shaky but I did it with no problem. Of course, I thought this was so abnormal that my fingers even shook a little. Well, when I mentioned the pictures, a young, healthy teacher friend told me she couldn't even do it no matter how much she tried. She couldn't squeeze her fingers together like that simultaneously. One kept bending forward or bouncing back. She ended up doing the peace sign instead. When I looked at the collage of photos, I saw many struggling to make the sign and the pictures captured their struggle which made it kind of funny. Anyway, I doubt any of these people think they have something wrong with them. The bottom line is don't waste energy on these smaller "signs" they just don't lead you anywhere. I know the temptation and fight it myself and ask about small stuff on this board too. But in the end I know they can't give me any answers.Krackersones
