Good Vacation, Now Questions!

Hey everyone,

I'm back from a really nice Bass Lake vacation with my family. I actually HAD a good time this vacation. Believe me I thought about my aches and twitches but I tried really hard not to obsess.

I had a couple questions regarding different things going on. I had another mri before I left of my cervical spine and the doc never called so I assume that is good news. I am having wierd numbness, (I guess numbness is what you could call it. Its really not completely numb just feels indifferent), in my toes one the same BAD side. I also have been having a pain in my thumb knuckle. It hurts bad at different times. Sometimes I cant even press on it and if I cracked it HOLY COW it would send me to the moon. I can bend it, lift it, and press down on something with it. It is primarily the knuckle that hurts bad. It might be nothing but since my body is already is disarray I just thought maybe someone had some suggestions.

My twitching hasn't got worse so I guess that is a good thing but I see a family friend doc on Friday who is a MS specialist. Don't get me wrong I'm not now obsessing over ms I still have the same dam obsession. ***
I was going to see if he would give me another emg since it has been about 12 weeks since the last one. He probably wont either but it's not going to hurt to try and ask him. I also don't know if I should say anything about my thumb. I don't want him to think I'm searching for things. It REALLY hurts at times.
Any advice or suggestions would be grateful
Carri
PS Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July!!

Carri,
I have a friend in her 30s who has an arthritic thumb joint, swelling, pain, etc...you could have something like that, or even carpal tunnel related. I used to worry about *** but the neuro I saw assured me *** does not have ANY sensory symptoms, it is not that kind of disease. As for **, I worry about that too, especially since I have a very tiny and according to the neuro normal looking lesion that he barely saw on the MRI. Again, he told me lesions often appear in normal brain MRIs and are not always disease related. My right calf buzzes on and off and I have had the weird sensory things, and my doctor told me I just don't have MS. I had tingling last summer for a month and then it was gone. What I can tell you is my neuro told me BFS in his opinion is misfiring of nerve cells and a hyperactivity of these cells that cause a wide range of symptoms...most of which worry us and bring us here for answers.:) Don't worry about **, I know it is easier said than done...I think anxiety adds to our BFS. You even have the breathing and sleep thing that I mentioned.:) I think we have to get through the rough spots and just keep moving on, we know it WON'T kill us, just make us nervous. Good luck with your appointment and thanks for the reply to my post. I used to live near Santa Maria, loved Pismo Beach...enjoy California, it is "almost" as beautiful as Colorado.;)
take care,
Amy

Thanks Amy for taking time to address my concerns. I know it sounds really stupid to worry about a THUMB but it just hurts quite a bit and hasn't stopped for 3 weeks now. If I didn't have any other problems I probably would just go to my GP it see if it was sprained or something but he already thinks i'm a nut case. I'll see if it goes away in another week and then maybe I'll ask the doc.
Thanks again,
Carri

Carri,
You are welcome...you are not a nut case, this stuff just makes us "nutty" on occasion.:) I ran 3 miles today and my big toe felt funny, I almost worried until I realized I ran 3 miles and felt great. :) Good luck.
Amy

3 miles girly!!!
After a mile I'd drop dead. JK

I used to run 2 miles every other day but since all this crap I have laxed a lot. I do go to the gym but I ride the bike and do the treadmill for about 20 min. It's all my lazy self can muster these days. Oh well there are worse things right?

Carrilynn,

While I am not a doctor, the thumb problem seems unrelated. Is the joint inflamed at all? Red?

I also had very serious sensory symptoms when my twitching started. Rest assured, this is not als. My neuro also said that sensory symptoms immediately lead them away from exploring mnd.

You're okay. Ask your doctor about the joint. Also, imho, don't ask for another emg - it just perpetuates and fuels the fire of fear. Unless you have other serious issues like weakness it seems to be unnecessary. Your docs will order it if you need it...

Peace to you Carrilynn,

MarkS

Thanks Mark,

I didn't really think it was related but once this all happens you start analizing everything. My thumb really hurts but only when i press down on the knuckle like if I were to crack it. Maybe i just hurt it slightly somewhere along the way and it's another thing for me to focus on. I didn't really think it had any conjunction to ***. I did for a sec think about ms but I have had every dang test for that. It's just a dumb pain and I'm sure it will go away.

As for the emg....Hmmm I can't make any promises but so far no matter how much I have begged my original nuero and others I've seen they all so no anyway. So this doc will most likely be the same way. They all tell me it's unethical to perform an invasive test when it is absolutely not needed. Well poohie on them!! :D)

Carie -

I too have pain and cramping in my right hand. Sometimes it is a general pain felt over my entire hand, sometimes it's more specific and I can just feel it in my thumb or a couple of fingers or a couple of knuckles. I've had this for a few months now and nothing has really changed. I also have LOTS of calf twiching, muscle "ratcheting" in just about every major muscle, pain in my left foot and a slight hand tremor (both hands) you can see when I hold a spoon or a piece of paper. I really hope none of this is a precurser to something much worse. I'm constently worried about everthing that is going on with my body.

Are you taking anything for your anxiety? My GP put me on Paxil about 6 weeks ago to help take the edge off my severe health anxiety. All of my symptoms and their severety are still there, but I don't seem to be quite as obsessive about them as before. I just wish, as I'm sure you do, that I could get rid of this habbit of thinking I'm doomed every time I feel an unusual twitch, pain, tingly, ratcheting, vibrating, tremor, odd muscle sensation, etc.

Yes I am on effexor which has worked really well with my system. Its a very old med. I also take xanax as needed.

I was wondering if you have seen a neuro? Have you had an emg? I only ask because I've done it all and I'm still not 100% convinced.
Why?
I was just wondering if you were like me. You know all the docs are saying your fine and still I obsess.

Hi Carrie,

I too get joint pain - mainly in my knees, but also in my finger joints and sometimes shoulder. Hurts when I press on my joint and my left knee suddenly started cracking when I walk. Was tested for RA - negative.
Also constant twitching in left leg - buzzing, twitching, big jolts - everything. Twitching aswell in other leg, both arms and places I didn't even know that I had muscles! Also had the tremor thing in both arms and could see my hands shaking when I held them out - that comes and goes. They tested me for thyroid - that was negative aswell (arm tremor being common with high thyroid levels).

One thing I have noticed is that my temp is up a little bit - not much, but definitely higher than normal and my throat feels a little bit sore - been like this for weeks. Bloods are normal though - no sign of infection or inflammation.
I was wondering whether BFS may well be a post viral thing, even though the only thing I really had preceding my first twitch was a cold sore - but viruses can remain in the body for years and every time I get a cold sore my arm always tingles for weeks, except this is the first time that I've had twitches. Who knows?
At least when I'm in a boring meeting at work I can look at my twitching instead and it makes a change from doodling! My work colleagues think I've lost it - the only way I can get some minor relief from the leg twitching is to raise my leg to the level of my hip, but not have anything actually touching my leg - so I sort of balance my ankle on the back of a chair.

Anyway take care and best wishes from the UK!

Yeah I've pretty much come to the conclusion my thumb is so minor in the whole grand skeem of things.
As for working I give all of you the most credit because I seriously would have lost my job by now. I was so bad for a few months I couldn't function at all.
Oh and as far as a viral thing that's exactly what my ent said I had in the beginning. It was a debilitating pain in my left temple that effected my ear, numbness under my eye and no ability to sneeze at all. It was all on the left side which is the place I get most of my twitching. I was on steriods and then everything else came after. I still get the pressure in my head every once and a while so I know it's not gone completely but nothing like it was. I have always had wierd pressure in that ear and on that side of my head but they found nothing bad.
Go figure.
