Giving Up Nutrasweet and BFS Symptoms

Just FWIWI also used to drink at least 64 oz of Diet Coke a day for over 10 years.I gave up Aspartame & Nutrasweet completely about 3 months after I started having severe BFS symptoms.I've been off Nutrasweet for over a year now but I never noticed any reduction in symptoms as a result of giving it up.I did get symptom relief with hypnosis but that's a different thread but I guess I was kind of naively hoping that once I gave up Nutrasweet that all my symptoms would just make magically go away in a month or two (once the Nutrasweet was out of my body)Nonetheless, I'm glad I gave it up & have no intention of starting up again.

I don't know if there is a definite correlation, but I drank quite a bit of a lemonade that used Nutrasweet (I believe). I drank this for years after I gave up sugar. I thought that was the healthy thing to do lol... When I went to the neuro I filled out some paperwork that asked about any meds, OTC meds, alcohol use, diet, etc. The neuro initially asked me to cleanse my system for 6 weeks of any Caffeine, alcohol, sugars, and artificial sweeteners prior to administering any additional tests. He told me that he had seen benign fasiculations go away after a detox period. I gave up everything but the alcohol; however, I didn't see any dramatic improvement by cutting out the sweeteners. I think reducing the caffeine intake has helped some, but I still twitch. I, like many of you, am glad I quit and will not use artificial sweeteners any more.

My wife has read online about the possible connections concerning health issues and aspartame use and is convinced it has something to do with my twitching. However, I don't drink more than one diet soda per day (if that) and don't use it as a sweetener for anything else, so in my mind it has little if nothing to do with it. During my last neuro visit (still waiting some results - more later on this), she asked the neuro about it and he just gave her a "are you kidding?" look before saying that there was no connection that he was aware of.

My first job out of high school was working for a research company. They did alot of research on Aspartame. My job was to read the necropsy reports. Let me tell you all---whether or not your BFS is caused by aspartame or not, your should not consume it EVER. That stuff is poison and I can't believe they haven't yanked it. Now, I don't know about the other artificial sweetners as I quit soon after.

Edado: I agree with your statement here. I have a theory that, for many of us, our immune systems are too strong. You are right, it seems that many of us have been fairly healthy eaters and most of us work our or are very active. Then a flu bug hit, kicking off our immune systems. After the bug went away, our over-active immune systems continued to be supercharged and started attacking our nerve endings/muscles, especially those we use most often (calves, feet). My neurologist seems to favor the auto-immune theory as to why I have bfs/cfs, but hasn't stated that as his "official" theory. Food for thought, though.

And I still hope this is all, as the last 4 days have been a total nightmare for me. Well, particularly the last 4 days. Truthfully, it is since Feb that things have twisted in a way that I really do not like. You should see my quads on the right...If I only could revert this process!!!!

No. Not for me. Never had any but very small doses of aspartam and that was years ago. Im a tall, thin guy and have no need for light products. But I agree that aspartam aint a golden product. Why the #"¤¤""3¤&%#!! dont you drink common water (H2O) instead like God or the Big Bang created it? It taste wonderfull and have no side-effects whatsoever...

Indeed, I wonder too if there is a connection with aspartame...And the same for MSG, it comes all down to the same I read.....
