FQ Antibiotics: Rx Triggers?

Those that have been here long enough know that I believe my problems were triggered by an rx of the antibiotic cipro. It is in a class of antibiotics known as flouroquinolones (fq's) and some of the other common names are Levaquin, Tequin, Floxin, Trovan, Avelox and many others. The only other bb i belong to deals with these drugs and the reactions people have to them. Take a look at this post and see if it sounds familiar.

Here we go:

After 9 levaquin and 2 cipro i began to have a horrible ADRstarting in Oct. It was not until I started the Cipro thateverything came on. Although it started in my legs things havespread out over my entire body. My current symptoms include:1. stabbing pains from head to toe that come and go throughout the day2. elbow pain3. some tendon pain and stiffness4. terrible insommnia5. horrible tingling/burning, ants crawing sensations, muscletwitches throughout my entire body6. light and sound sensitivity7. foot and calf burning and pain8. hands and feet fall asleep at night, finger pain9. depression10. popping/cracking joints11. stabbing stomach pain12. vision disturbances - night vision decline, shimmering, increasein floaters and flashers13. ringing in earsIs my ADR typical? Will this get better with time?

Clearly this isn't the cause of BFS for most of the members here, but I believe there are some of us that are linked to fq's

I have many of those symptoms and am being treated for Lyme & mycoplasma fermentans (tested pos). Have you been tested? Every one of those symptoms appears on a list I have of Lyme symptoms. The blood tests are not very reliable so I would suggest a LLMD just to rule it out. With Lyme, some people's symptoms get much worse once on antibiotics which could explain your probs w/cipro. Just a thought.

I am also starting to believe my symptoms began after taking cipro for a uti. Originally, I thought that my problems were due to birth control pills and my hypertension medicine as they were the drugs I was taking when the symptoms presented. (see my post under 'experiences with bfs'). But, a friend recently mentioned to me that maybe my symptoms were due to the use of cipro. However, I discounted it at first because I took the med approx 2 months before I began to experience the first symptom. Moreover, I only took it for three days. But, after reading up on it, I think I have been "floxed"-the term given to those people affcted by this drug. While the twitching has greatly reduced, I still suffer muscle aches, stiff muscles and horrible floaters. Not to mention tingling in my hands and feet. I read somewhere that the peripheral nervous system has the ability to regenerate and heal itself. Needless, to say I am praying that my symptoms go away so that I can remember what normal feels like again. :(

Gary are the reactins to these antibiotics immediate or can they be some time later? Thanks in advance you always take the time to answer guestions it is appreciated.

I've experienced all the symptoms identified in your post. Mine, however, started a month after I took Vantin (cefpodoxime proxetil) for a serious case of strep throat. I strongly suspect the Vantin but it could have been the strep infection. Either way my life changed at that point in time.

Take care,

Gary
