Fear of Neurologist Appointment

Went to the GP today for my twiching and she is doing an Electrolyte, Thyroid and Muscle enzyme test. If they dont pan out then she is sending me to a Neuro. I am so scared of them finding something bad.

Julie:

I say this not to discount your anxiety but rather to comfort you. The testing sounds very typical, for what you're presenting. Thyroid and electrolyte are the first thing to check. From an unrelated medical experience, I think I remember any results of a muscle enzyme test aren't going to tell you much anyhow.

Don't worry, this sounds very routine.

Those tests are nothing to worry about, even if there are abnormalities. In fact, I was praying for electrolyte imbalances or thyroid problems just so I'd have an answer.

It could also mean that treating neurological disorders is not your GP's strong suit. Maybe he did poorly in his neurology classes!

On the bright side, at least now you get to go an see someone who specializes in these things and who will likely be able to help you more. My GP admitted to me that I knew more about BFS than he did. He even asked me for photocopies of articles from neurology journals that I had! Despite this, he resisted sending me to a neurologist. It was only after 3 years that he finally gave me a referral. Now I have a follow up with my Neuro next week to discuss options for treatment of my BFS, most likely Neurontin and similar meds.

Thank you all for your support. This is such a strange thing (BFS). I got back all my tests and of course they were normal. Next is the Neuro guy, but, can anyone tell me what kind of tests they will do next? Is it necessary to see a neuro if there is no numbness or weakness or is this just to ease my mind?

I am going through the same thing as you. Started with cramping and soreness in my calves and spred up to my arms about a month and a half after I was stung by somthing in the water at the beach.

I have had blood test after blood test to come back normal. I've seen GP, NERUO, REMUO! I've had MRI, EMG/NC all normal.

I asked my NERUO about BCFS and she said she had never heard of it! Also asked if it could have came from the sting and all said NO!

I am still having problems, but it seems to have peaked and leveled off. I also lost my job because of all the pain and missed time from work for the DR. visits and testing. I now have no income or insurance to add to my problems!

They have brought up Fibromyalgia , but from what I've read about this, it seems to move around from day to day, wk to wk. BCFS from what I've read seems to stay in the arms and legs mostly. (could be wrong!)

Your situation sounds just like me, I went to my GP and he ran the same tests and told me if they turn out normal he'd send me to a neuro, and of course everything came out fine, so I went to the neuro, he did the strength test on me, and said he didn't think it was ALS but said the only safe way to totaly rule it out was an EMG so he ordered one and they got me in right away and that came out fine also, he said that I had benign twithching that probably came on by a virus and that they could just go away or may last for years :crying: I have now been twitching for around 9 months  Hang in there you'll be just fine!
