Fasciculations: Channel Problem?

I've had fasciculations for over two years now and while nothing appears to be wrong according to my neurologist, he did mention that it could be caused by a "channel problem"...his theory is that sometimes our sodium, calcium and potassium channels get crossed up and accept the wrong element. Since we have billions and billions of ion channels in our bodies that make up our muscles and nerves, it makes sense that sometimes they make mistakes. Now that we have noticed the fasciculations, it would appear that they happen much more frequent, when actually, they have been happening all along.

Unfortuantely, there is not enough research on this theory to validate his claim, but it certainly seems logical.

Has anyone else heard of this?

Nobigdeal,
I think this line of thinking is the ground work for what we all call BFS / BCFS. Not to be mean but your neuro is not breaking any new grounds here. I do agree that it obviously happens without having BFS. But why do we get it more than others plus associated symptoms is still anyones guess. Maybe everyone has a little BFS while we have a lot of BFS!

It is interesting that researchers keep finding new ion channel diseases as if some environemntal factor was causing the problem! I can't believe we have been on the planet this long and have all these genetic errors. The environemnt has a heavy had in causing BFS! That's human produced toxins are activating or deactivating some gene thats causing these type of diseases.

My neuro said the same thing. He said he is not surprised that I have this because the heart disease that I have is caused by the same thing. My grandmother had this heart disease and she had essential tremors or something like that. My mother has the heart disease and she has muscle problems and my niece has essential tremor which now and then has twitches that are happening more frequently.

I do have to say I would of noticed these symptoms before, maybe I had a mild version of it before and it has gotten worse but surely would of noticed these symptoms before. So I do not know why if we have this channel problem why it all of a sudden comes out years later, this is the only thing that makes me think this is not the cause..Jenn
