Facing Pain Due to Weather

Today I am having pain. The knuckles in my fingers and toes feel like they are screwed on too tight and the muscle in my right hand feels like it is pulling tighter. My right shoulder all the way down into my right hand hurts. I know I sound like a big whine bag here, but I kinda think it is related to the weather as its been rainy here for a couple of days. Does any one have their symptoms affected by the weather? I hope I haven't asked this before. Remember, I am getting older and the memory.....well sometimes it just isn't what it used to be  All joking aside, this wouldn't be indicative of *** would it? I don't remember seeing this type of symptom mentioned here.Cindy

Cindy- I'VE BEEN THROUGH THAT CYCLE A LOT With my SHOULDER!!! I Think its tension from and I hate to chalk it up again to "anxiety"..Since I've had the EMG it hasn't happened again. I dont know if its related or the good lord finally said "rest little girl, you got a baby coming and a lot of no sleeping ahead of you"! Lovely

Hi CIndy - I have had the pain in my left hand and bi-cept (pretty close to the shoulder) for close to a month now - so I though for sure I had the worst case senerio. They are aching as I type this and I have had those horrible twitches or thumpers whatever they are called all the time - in the left arm/leg. But, I have gone to my two neurologists and both say I pass the clinical exam with flying colors (now if I can try and convince myself of that) - so I know that you are okay and weather can have A LOT to do with it!Please try not to stress - I know that you are fineKarin

Cindy,On my very first visit to the neuro, he told me--during the EMG--that pain is NOT a presenting symptom of you-know-what. Turns out I have carpal tunnel in both wrists, and the pain went up my rigth arm as well. I won't speculate on yours, but I know you're OK otherwise. As for getting older and memory, I don't agree that---what was I saying? Oh well, I forget but I do hope you're feeling better!Karin--great to see you're back; I'll drop you a line when I have a bit more time.Mark

Cindy,I ache today also. I've had a lot of aching on and off throughout the years with BFS. Today was a particulary bad one for me. Legs, shoulder, as well as neck, jaw and head. We moved from Los Angeles, (by the National Forest where it was damp) to Las Vegas 10 years ago. Both my husband and I noticed an improvement in our "achiness" here in the desert. Even here though, when the weather changes it really affects us. My sister and mother also both ache severely with weather changes. I wouldn't be concerned about it being anything serious. I just took a liquid Advil and will lay down---they work pretty well although I can't take them often due to stomach issues. Best Wishes, Denise

Hi all, add me to the list of achey people. My right shoulder has bothered me for over a year and sometimes my upper arms, wrists, fingers, knee, thigh...you name it. Mine moves around like firbromyalgia would. Some days, I am ache free and then it starts up again. My muscle aches are what prompted my doc to do the CK and sed rate tests back in March. Both were normal. Like Mark's doc, my doc said pain is not how **S presents. I'm starting to think I do have fibromyalgia on top of BFS??LInda

Linda,Same here, I wonder about fibromyalgia as well. One physician diagnosed me with it, but my acupuncturist who deals with a lot of Fibromyalgia patients doubts it, as I'm not "tender enough" at certain pressure points, (my tenderness does fluctuate though). I've often wondered if these two disorders don't somehow "overlap"---they seem to have a lot of the same symtpoms. Take care, Denise

Hi denise, I know fibromyalgia is basically a disease of exclusion. Once they have excluded other things and the muscle pains still exist, wonder what they call it then? Just curious what do you take for your muscle pain? I've been taking excedrin back and body and it does help, but it doesn't take it away. So tired of this...Linda

I just posted about this earlier and may be bringing up something that's old news, but I read a little on tension myositis syndrome and it was described as being a (perhaps) milder form of fibro. It's a pretty interesting theory that talks about the mind body connection and pain and apparently, twitching is definitely involved in this syndrome. As my "symptoms" have floated all over the map and have included phantom pain stuff, I think I may investigate this a little more. For what it's worth...

I, too, ache a lot. my shoulder pain comes and goes, it is here right now. It really, really hurts, and the pain extends down my arms a bit. Pain in the shoulder, burning in the arm. Other times my muscles feel like they are bruised and tender to the touch. What to take? I wish I knew. Aspirin/tylenol doesn't work at all ... I'll try the excedrin, though, and let you know if it works for me too. thanks for the tip.and about the Fibromyalgia connection, even though I don't have the pressure points, my neuro said "well, maybe you have fibro"..but my doctor said it's all anxiety. I have a tough time buying that one. I really do wish, however, that someone would say to me "you have this...." anyway, just rambling.... good night everyone, I'm going to call it a day. talk later, Val

I've been having pain/stiffness/tenderness ever since the twitches started (about 5-6 years ago). The pain's mainly located in my forearms and elbows but also in my shoulders and sometimes in my neck. Sometimes my hands are so stiff I can hardly type on the computer or pet my cat - writing is hard, too, oftentimes. I was diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel and ulnar nerve entrapment in both hands / arms :( I guess that's the price for having worked in IT for 25 years. I've been having PT for 2 years now but that hasn't helped much. I know I should have surgery but have been putting that off.The pain/stiffness etc. definitely gets (a lot) worse when the weather is bad or when there's a weather change - but also when I'm anxious or nervous. Anxiety and mental tension are a big factor in developing CT and other repetitive strain injuries.dawiz

i didn't know the carpel tunnel/anxiety connection. I don't do repetitive type activities/jobs, so I discounted CT as an option. Interesting, thanks.

@fuzzyjuly: I think the connection is that CT and RSI in general have a lot to do with muscle tension. When you're anxious, your muscles automatically get tense. Doing repetitive tasks while your muscles are tense hurts you much more than doing them in a relaxed state.

Hi Suchamess, it sounds like you have been reading Dr. John Sarno's book on mind body relaxation techniques. I bought it last year when I was having some back pain, but haven't tried his techniques for BFS. Maybe it would work? I agree with Dawiz that tension and anxiety makes the muscle pain much worse. Whenever we go on vacation, my muscle pain completely disappears. This has happened to me 4 times since my BFS started. Just shows how much state of mind can affect the body. Linda

Linda,I take liquid Advil---I'm not suppose to because of stomach issues, but if my pain is severe enough I find I do need an "anti-inflammatory"; Advil Gel caps seem to work the best for me. My daughter works for a large prescription management company and she recommended them to me, (most people I know who try them really think they work great)! There must be some type of inflammation going on with me, b/c tylenol doesn't help at all. I have some prescription pain meds (for the real severe pain) but I don't like taking them and they really don't help that much, (they're mixed with a tylenol product instead of aspirin because of my stomach issues). Also, my son bought me one of those "wrap around neck pillows" filled with herbs that you heat up in your microwave. It really does help with the neck and shoulder pain & stiffness but it's getting a little hot here in Vegas for it now!Best Wishes, Denise

Hi Denise, I have tried regular advil but not the liquid gels. Thanks for the tip. Odd so many of us have the shoulder, arm, hand type pain. Wish someone could figure out something to give us true relief.Linda
