Eyes Twitching and Spasming Badly

Now I am finding that both of my eyes are twitching \ spasming badly. I don't just mean the occasional twitch, but badly spasming. I really do think now that I am in the *beep* so to speak...

Its funny you should mention constant spasming in your eyes. I had my right eye muscle spasming almost constantly all of last week. It was driving me nuts. I could not make the muscle spasm stop by closing my eyes tightly, relaxing them or anything. Because I've found a strong correlation between my diet and my twitching/spasming symptoms in the past I started looking very closely at everything I ate. I've been in an extended stay suite hotel in Boston, MA and have been cooking all of my meals except for breakfast since the hotel has a free hot breakfast every morning. It finally occured to me that the hotel was putting milk in their scrambled eggs, which I had been eating most mornings. Duh! I don't use milk when I make them so it never even occured to me. Anyway, I switched to their hard boiled eggs and the twitching/spasming in my right eye cleared up over the weekend. In regards to your diet, have you made any changes in it lately? Are you eating more of something you usually don't eat that much?

Ok, the eye thing must be contagious, I think MSM needs to chime in on this one, Where you at Mary, I know you're out there :D)

Ok Mommylondon I am out here and I am chiming in. I did have an eye twitch which developed late Saturday Night but I had litterally been staring at the computer and watching football all day. It was gone when I woke up yesterday and has not returned since. Angusglover, did't you mention starting some new meds recently and could it be a side effect of that? Otherwise if you do a lot of screen looking at or football watching like I do maybe that is the problem. My neuro says that the main cause of eye twitch is fatigue and you may need to rest them.Mary

Ok, I have consulted with my personal neurological disease consultant, and I am happy to report back with some very interesting news. The Big A doesnt affect the eyes. not only does it not affect the eyes, but muscles around the eyes with twitching and muscles dieing are one of the very last areas that the disease affects. From what I was told and understand, there are areas in the body such has the heart, and the eyes that have special safeguards to protect them from being affected in certain diseases, particularly MND. Now thats not saying that the eye muscles dont get affected at all, but it is generally very, very late in the end stages of the disease after everything else is on its way out or gone already.I really hope this information provides some peace and reassurance for those be aggravated by eye twitching, but at its worst, that is the most it is, aggravating  Take Care Robynn :D)

I don't know how well the topmax works to calm twitches I use klonopin and gabapentin. Seems to dull them probably more than if I did'nt have them. Do your eyes completely close or are they in the muscles around your eyes?Mary

It seems to be in the muscles round the eyes.....although sometimes an eye will close and I look like a fool as I kind of wink as it twitches.....

Yes, I get these as well. I think it is very annoying and mine has come back this evening non stop right in the area of the inner eye above my tear duct and under my eye brow. I really hate this because it has been non stop for the past three hours. I finally took a klonopin and it has slowed it down some but as soon as it wears off it will be back again. My neuro will not inject it with botox because he says it will go away on its own. Believe me if it did not stop I would not hesitate to use botox. Have you ever tried Klonopin? I really don't think the topomax is that great for twitching and I wonder why he gave it to you for that. Have you tried other drugs for the twitching? Do your eyes twitch non stop like mine once they start?Mary

My neuro seems very reluctant to prescribe me anything sensible. Once they start, they will not stop, 24x7 twitching...my GP just says "but there is no weakness".....which is most annoying!!!

Might be worth while investing in having an IgG food allergy/sensitivity blood test done. It will give you some difinitive answers if your symptoms are driven by diet. Page 2 of this PDF has a flow chart showing how food sensitivities can be formed and how neurological tics and twitches can result: Its worth a shot. Good luck.

Why won't your neuro prescribe anything else and what does a gp know the eyes are not affected by motor neuron disease usually especially the big one and no one wants to go through life with thier eyes constantly twittching me included. The Klonopin does seem to help but if they really get going than I have to wait until my next dose to hopefully get some relief. I don't understand Drs. If they want to help than prescribe something for the so called anxiety and see if it helps not meds that are made for teating migraines. Topomax is an antisiezure drug but usually not prescribed for BFS. I hope you get some relief soon. I am afraid to rub my eyes for fear of setting it off!Mary

The topomax is making it worse I think as it is making my sleep worse as one of the side affects is sleep disturbance, which makes my eyes tired then makes the eyes twitch worse...grrrrrrrrr

I would tell your neuro you are having this side effect becauese eye fatigue along with bfs is one of the major reasons eyes twitch. If you've had a clean MRI that is about all it could be. Thats why I suspected that new medication from the start. Call him and ask him for klonopin or tegretol or another one which has been more effective with the twitching. Tell him the other one is making you hyper. They willl listen to you. Once they gave me a med that made me have heart palpitations and they pulled me off of it as soon as I called and told them. Call them they work for you not the other way around.mary

Sinuses wreak havoc on eyes. It can make us tense around the face; hence the twitches. It's like when I was at the dentist and had to hold my mouth open forever. It wasn't long before my lips were twitching like mad suckers. We deal with it, it passes...the end. :D) Basso
