Exposure to Mercury as a Kid

Since I have been twitching daily... I have been thinking about things I may have been exposed to in my past. Well I remember now. When I was a kid (around 7 years old) I remember my friends and I got this fever thermometer that had a piece of mercury at the end. Well STUPID OF US to have used a lighter and melted it and put it in a ziplock bag. I remember a burnt smell. So that means I was exposed. Do you think this has caused me long term damage? I was fine up until 8 months ago? What do you guys think? It's not methyl mercury like the kind you find in tuna or fish but it was actually elemental mercury in which I am quite sure I breathed in the vapors! I'm gonna bring this up to my doctor when I see her next month.

If you are looking for an "environmental" cause...good fkin luck!! Do you realize how many bad things your are exposed to with every breath you take? Goodness...If you want to go this route in your search (which after years and years of this forum being in exsistance, not one person that I know of has ever found their "cause"), think really hard about all of the chemicals you are ingesting the next time you take a drink of water...yes, even bottled water.Yanno, at first, I was of the mind set "I AM GOING TO FIND OUT WHY IN THE HELL I STARTED TWITCHING!!". After about a day, I gave up...the possibilites are never ending...I choose not to be a tiny little plankton in the sea of life who is constantly just swimming around waiting for something to consume me. BFS almost did just that, but I caught myself and said WTF am I doing? At that point in time I chose to be a mermaid instead...and life is much, much better. :D) ~*~Amy~*~

I got hit in the head with a croquet mallet as a kid, I wonder if this is why I get headaches every so often!Seriously, what a waste of time and brain power. You honestly think playing with a broken thermometer at 7 caused twitching now?? And all of us who exactly the same twitching and BFS you have, what about us? We didn't play with mercury??No offense momma, but live your life. You twitch, its annoying, nobody knows the cause, but we know its benign. There's people who with serious medical problems who would give their right arm to have precious time to live life. I doubt if they had that time they'd waste a second of it wondering if they got exposed to some chemical as a 7 yr old.

The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland had mercury poisoning - are you like him? They used to use mercury in manufacturing hat brims. Elemental mercury, when it vaporizes and you inhale it, can affect your CNS. However, one thermometer has very little and it would not have taken all these years to have an effect. I was exposed to a whole lot of mercury in a spill many years ago and never had ill effects from it: the room was very cool (70 F) so it was doubtful that vaporization took place plus the ventilation was good. Picking it up was another whole story - special Hg spill kits, hazardous disposal, etc. Hahahahahaheeeheehe! Would you like some tea White Rabbit?

That reminds me. I broke one of those compact florescent light bulbs last year. I took some precautions when cleaning it up, but I'm not sure how careful I was. Don't know if that has anything to do with BFS. We all must have SOMETHING in common.

I just came from visiting my school to prepare my classroom for the next school year which starts right after Labor Day. While I was there, an assistant principal told me that she gave my name to the Department of Health who is coming to visit because there have been reports of an unusually high number of miscarriages and other strange health problems at our school site. Our school is new and she said her father told her it is built on a former plant where they dumped a lot of waste. I have no idea if this is related to my problems but I guess it is another theory. I think all I will ask about is the types of substances I could be being exposed to and what the tests are for them so I can find out if I have the exposure. I agree that this is a long shot and I am not wasting too much time worrying about it. When I was a defense lawyer, I had to research and write a memo about the potential dangers and legal liability involving power lines. There is some evidence that those things cause any number of problems (very low risk but there is evidence of some risk) and lots of times the effect is many years later. I moved so much I have no idea what schools or homes I lived in were close to power lines. I guess I could worry about that too. As an attorney I also worked on cases where large numbers of people claimed exposure to manganese and had nervous system problems. Most of the time the nervous system problems were not that severe but of course if there is money to be had lots of people come out of the woodwork. I am no expert in toxic exposure and health problems but I have to believe there are many people who do have effects from toxins but they are not extreme and can be lived with. So even if the worst is true and my symptoms have something to do with toxins, it does not mean it will get any worse.Krackersones

When I was a kid I too remember playing with mercury from a thermometer. I really don't know why my parents let me have it but I highly doubt this has caused twitching this many years later.

When I was a kid, one of my favorite pasttimes was to find rusty screws and suck on them. I don't know why, I just loved the taste of rust. So I would find something that was rusty (usually a screw, but sometimes a bolt, or a nut, etc), I would pop it in my mouth, and I would suck on it for hours and hours like it was a lollipop. To this day, I always wonder what kind of health effect that might have had on my body. Who knows, maybe that's why I go out and dismember prostitutes.

why are there people who get sick after exposure to toxic substances via air or/and water pollution and others don't?Well, it is about genetics. even with mnd they think you need a certain genetical predisposition that - together with this exposure to toxic substances - can cause the chain reaction. some get cancer or mnd, others get vitiligo or lupus. and i am sure that some can get bfs. there is always genetics involved. i work in an ngo and have some insight on the influence of toxics to the human body. Jro: in your school they should not only scan the air but also the drinking water. the problem there is, that this can ask a variety of tests. tatsu: i don't know if your mercury exposition caused problems. but why don't you go for a natural heavy metal chelation/detoxification. just get sure, you find a good expert/doctor.

Mario...TJ...I'm totally feelin the love here!!Dont forget about all of the markers you sniffed...Mario I KNOW you walked around on more than one occasion with colorful marks all over your nose!!   Keep it comin boys...you guys make it easier to get through the long days...especially Mondays when there is a coffee shortage!*hugs & smooches* to you both...~*~Amy~*~

Oh of course, I grew up in the late 70's, just when scented markers were first coming into popularity. I probably had a green apple "Hitler" mustache every day for the first three years of my school life. Man those things smelled good.

Why, you're just a kid. Maybe you got your twitches from all the kool aid and the nummy cocoa puffs. Or maybe from watching Hannah Montana reruns. Do your parents know you are up on the internet this late?

I have also been wondering if the intensive chess playing in my "young" days could have triggered my twitches today. BTW i also smelled the black spritmarkers. They had a nice sweet banana like smell. Those where the days. Did grow up in the 80´s though, when moonboots and BMX bikes where the *beep*.. arhh.. and also breakdance,i even had the white gloves that came with the tape hehe.

hahah ok I had to laugh at some of your posts you guys are funny. I shall try to relax more. I will not stress out too much. And I am actually twitching less for some odd reason. yes it feels odd lol. But still twitching just not as much as before. WHICH IS GREAT!

We're all prone to those laughable moments when the anxiety gets the best of us and we think some ridiculous thoughts about all this. Sometimes you gotta just laugh at it and the fact that this stuff (BFS) can make sane people come up with some nutty theories, ideas. That said, I am seriously worried about my paste eating and kool aid toilet water *beep*. ;)

Mario- You could have high iron from all that rusty nut (and bolt) sucking. I thought paste eating was weird but rusty bolts takes the cake.
