Exploring Muscle Cramps/Soreness

So here goes,...

when you talk about cramping,...do you mean like aching? Or do you mean like leg cramps that send you rocketing off the bed to stretch it out? Or foot cramps that make you have to stretch out your foot...

I have a lot of muscle soreness and tightness- is this the same as cramping? (this even sounds silly as I write it !). Like when I go to walk down the stairs in the morning, one calf or the other is always really tight and I get a pulling sensation for a second ...then it stretches out on its own just from being on my feet...

Sorry for needing this clarification but when I think of cramping I think of when I was pregnant and would wake up with leg cramps that would send me jumping out of bed screaming

can only speak for myself, but when I say cramp I mean cramp as in wake you out of a sound sleep, stop you in your tracks and yelp, and having to uncurl toes with a hand. I have these in my feet and calves. That said, I also have milder twinges and muscle "pulls" and 'almost' cramping in the same areas...same process across a spectrum of severity I guess...I get them all....

Mine are the crampy feeling as well. I was told that a true cramp, you can acturally see your muscle turn into a rock hard ball.

I asked my neuro at UCLA this question, as I have a lot of muscle pain and tightness.

They referred to cramping as "charley horse" type cramping, where you're basically locked up and in excruciating pain.

Good question.

Shelley,

If this helps, I used to get a lot of tightness (not what I'd call cramps) in my calves during tense situations in the latter days of my marriage. Interesingly enough my ex-wife suffered similary as well. When I drink red wine (only red - and not bottles of the stuff, just 2 large glasses - not white, not beer, not spirits) the day after my calves are tight/tense. Incidently I am calf "twitcher" (past 5/6 weeks). Wonder if calves are just weak spots in many peoples bodies? They do seem to a lot of work to do, helping to hold us upright etc. But I'm not trained in the medical field so perhaps that's a load of rubbish!

I do have very, very mild cramping in both feet (but mainly left), though its not nearly so bad as some of the other posts here. I also experience tight (ish) tendons sometimes in both thighs and behind left knee but again this is only very mild. The other night I awoke with tingling toes (but not big toes) on left (mainly) and right feet. Also experienced tingling in fingers on both hands. I do have lots of twitches in both calves (again mainly left) and sometimes in feet, arms (elbow joint area), shins, behind knees and backside. When I lie flat on my back I've no symptoms at all (welll OK maybe the very odd calf twitch but only once). Does this help? Oh and occasionly I get an, well sort of "odd" feeling in left calf.

Shelley,
I get a lot of cramping, especially in my hands and legs and especially after running. It is very normal to get this after exercising, even without BFS. From other posts, I know you have been exercising latley, and I'm sure that is the biggest cause of your cramps.

Shelley,
I too notice the crampy feeling more when I've exercised and especially if I haven't drank enough fluids that day.... The fluid thing is probably more of a trigger for me than the exercise......Drink up..... :)

Shelley,

I've often wondered the same exact thing.

I've only experienced true "Charlie Horses" about three times in my entire life. All were experienced while lifting weights or exercising.

However, I get "crampy" type feelings all of the time in my legs (even quads). I get sharp pains in my arches and have oftened wondered if these were cramps, as I'm not sure you can get full blown charlie horses in the arches of feet.

Can you?
