Exploring Hyperreflexes: Causes?

Hi!

I have a question about "hyperreflexes" I know they can be a sign of some neuro problem, but isn't it common that some people have them naturally?

Also, can they change from exam to exam (i.e., two years ago when the doc hammered my kneee, my legs flew up fast and far, the last time I had them checked, they were normal)

Anyone know what causes this?

I also have brisk reflexes. My neuro said it was normal. My reg Dr. said 40% of the pop do not have perfectly normal reflexes.

Thanks StephG22 and Gary!

StephG22, do you also have fasciculations? Are they in one spot or widespread?

Gary, how about you? I know I read where you have them in your calves, but do you also have "rovers"?

Do you guys ever feel like your skin is going to "pop" open?

In other words, they are that strong?

StephG22, like you, I get "pops" everywhere, but my calves are becoming constant!

Can you see them? When I can see mine, they look like a heartbeat.

Also, do yours (Gary and StephG22) move around in your calves? Is this normal for BFS?

Thanks for your helpful answers :)

I almost had a heart attack when I closely studdied my calves for a few minutes. Then I looked at my non-twitching husbands calves and they also look like the muscles are "breathing". He said unless you are under anesthesia your muscles will constantly move a little.

No, this is not my pulse.

I used the metaphor like a "heartbeat" because my twitches do not look like a 'bag of worms" or "snakes" as a lot of others have described them.

It thumps for a few minutes, then quits. It moves around both calves and sometimes right above the knee.
