EMG Results: Fasciculations Present

The Subject says it all.

I'm wondering how many people had fasciculation’s show up in their EMG.

I had fasciculation’s in both my calf’s and the muscle on the front of my leg visible on the EMG but the doctor said that they were benign

I had a couple.

If you read the Mayo study paper (available on this website), you'll see that a majority of BFSers examined had "excessive" fasciculations (visible on EMG) in at least one muscle. The median number was two. One poor guy/girl had excessive fascics in 13 muscles, I believe. Since non-BFS people can have fascics that show up on EMG, the "excessive" label was the subjective interpretation of the EMG administrator.

In other words - fascics are very common on EMG for BFS people, and not uncommon for everyone else.

Yep. I wish I could remember where I saw them but I remember people on this board who had fascics show up on their EMG. I didn't pay much attanetion because I was just gleaning through the posts. If I find any, I'll PM you ...

YOU BETTER NOT BE WORRYING ABOUT THIS BY THE WAY.... YES PEOPLE HAVE FASCICS SHOW UP ON THEIR EMG AND YOU DO NOT HAVE ALS....

Just wanted to make sure you weren't looking for stuff to worry about and were asking this question just out of curiosity or to make polite conversation.

hehe

I had fasciculations on EMG in four muscles in my lower legs (calves and tibials on both legs). As others have mentioned, some level of fasciculation on EMG is normal for the general population, and the Mayo study noted excess fascics in anywhere from 1–13 muscles in BFS sufferers.

From what I've been able to gather, fascics in the lower leg are particularly common. Calves are clearly among the most common place for benign fascics (even the neuro textbooks say so!), and the tibial muscles seem like reasonable candidates for more fascics given their location and the amount of work they do when walking. They're just smaller muscles so fascics wouldn't necessarily be noted during normal activity.

Don't worry about your EMG results—your neuro knows what s/he's doing, and would have told you if there was any concern.

I had fascics in numerous muscle groups including my calves, triceps, quads, back and elsewhere. I also had fibs in one location in my back. Needless to say, the combo of fascics and fibs really got me worked up, but not my docs.....they said BFS, and after 3 years of twitching with no true progression, i finally believe them. As someone else said earlier, just based on the name, benign fasciculation syndrome, fascics should be expected and are nothing to worry about.

Take care,

Gary
