Effect of ALA on Aching/Twitching

I was taking between 400-600mg per day. After a couple of weeks, it seemed to be helping. Twitching was decreased and my forearms/hands were not aching. This lasted a couple of months. However, I can’t be sure if it was coincidence or not. When I ran out and stopped taking it in December, I also got a cold at the same time, and a flare up. So I can’t tell if it was the cold or stopping the ALA. Too many variables. I’m giving it a try again.

I started taking ALA 2 weeks ago. So far no change. However, I have noticed that within about 10 minutes of taking it, I get really nasty heartburn... anyone else notice this? I always take it with food, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.

Yes Diego4Life, I have had to lay off of it for awhile because of this.
I am taking Life Extension "R" Dihydro Lipoic Acid Liquid capsules.
I am thinking of taking the mixed and see what happens.
Are you taking a mixed version?

Thanks

-I found out that alpha-lipoic acid is prescribed in Germany for neuropathy so I did some research on Emilyomouse websites. One thing I found out is that it is important when taking ALA is that it has to be on an empty stomach, otherwise it won't be absorbed. That might explain why a lot of people have had no effect or mixed results.
-I'd bet that most people were taking it with meals, it actually says on my bottle to take with meals. But I'll trust the Emilyomouses on this one since they seem to be ahead with the science on this (I guess thats what happens when pharmaceutical companies don't run your government).

Good data. I like the Linus Pauling institute data, as it appears to be balanced and have analysis. Note that they are using racemic (same quantity of the R and S isomers) ALA in the discussion, although it appears that the R is the form that is utilized in-vivo.

In any case, on an empty stomach, ALA can give me the WORST heartburn.
