Doctor Experiences with Twitching

Hi Guys,

My name is mark, I'm 28 and have been twitching for 15mo. I have been following your posts for a long time but just never posted yet. I got my twitching a week after taking an MMR vaccine and I have had just about every symptom you guys talk about since. One slight extra problem that I have had with all this is that I am a dr, so it makes it that much more difficult to not have any answers. Not to mention, med school, passing my board exams, and working like a dog has been hard to do with *** on my mind. I also just got married and had a beautiful daughter, which has made my life more precious to me than it has ever been before.

I have still not gone to see anyone about my symptoms though because I know most doctors will not have a clue and will look at me like I'm crazy. And i just dont have the courage to face the docs that would know about it at the *** centers. So for now, I like to assume that I have BFS and one of these days I will try to gather the courage to get an EMG done.

In case anyone is interested I will list a brief summary of my symptoms up to this point:

Twitches everywhere especially biceps, triceps, hands, feet, pecs, shoulders, thighs, butt, neck, abdomen...use to be several thousand/day but lately more like 50-500/day. Hotspots definitely change week to week. Also get buzzing, fingers that move on their own and facial sensations/twitches that I do not see but feel like a hair tickling me;

One sided cramps in my calf that linger for several days after running too fast or jumping a lot but then go away, and a cramp in my bicep that comes and goes without any precipitating factors know to me. Cramps in my hands/wrists/feet for a couple weeks on and then off for several months; Difficulty swallowing for 1 month that disappeared for 6months(with lots of prayer); Stumbling on words (but that one could easily be in my head).

I got gutters and dents in various places but hard to say if they were there before;

Other than my symptoms though, I seem to have pretty normal strength and no obvious wasting after 15mo...?I did just paddle out in 6- 8 foot surf yesterday without any problems.

Anyway, your forums have helped me get through a lot of rough times. Thanks so much--Mark

Hi Mark,

Sorry to welcome you to our group :D) but take solace in that you fit right in. In the first place, my latest neurologist told me that by the time there is widespread twitching, atrophy and weakness would also be very apparent. Your situation sounds very much not to be the case. If you went surfing yesterday, 1) good for you! 2) start thinking benign! This condition does a number on your head- especially at first- so you need to recognize that and know that is a common occurance for almost everyone here. Stress in the form of a new baby, passing your boards and overworking do not give your body a chance to rest and heal, so please try to allow time for that for you own well-being.

Cramp-Fascicualtion Syndrome is not very well-known, but if you go to a neurologist, you simply must find one that is familiar with it and it would be helpful if they specialized in immunity as well. You symptoms sound similar to mine and that is what I have. Going to a neurologist is very hard to do, but for some of us it is essencial to our mental health in the long run.

We also need the input of Kit (a fellow doctor), Sue (mental advisor to all) and Basso (a fellow Phd and philosopher) here to help you with the rest. I can only say you know at least that you are not alone and many of us with benign diagnoses share in your struggle with the anxiety, but also have the same exact symptoms.

Hope that helps,
Sir_Trouserz

Hi bidrock,

After 15 months you can be pretty sure its benign. People with *** who twitched at first they had it for 2-6, rarely more than 8 months. They didnt have wasting but some balance, strenght or other problems, positive babinsky or hoffmans sign... You are OK after 15 months..I wish I was in your shoes :) (Starting 5 month of twitching)

Hang in there pal- I've had the same for 4 years. Dont let the worry and axiety effect your life. Eat healthy, try to stay fit, dont get dehydrated and
you will learn to live with it beleive it or not. Sleep is a big factor as well. Best of luck and there are many out there who are going through the same thing so your not alone even though you may feel that way at times.
