Do People Have Hotspots or Widespread Twitching?

Just curious whether there are people who do not have their hotspots (like calves) rather than widespread sporadic twitching,i.e. twitches in back, then twitches in arm, then twitches in thigh...no area affected continuosly.

TD, I have twitches all over! I get them allot in my calf's and popcorn all over. I do get hot spots for a couple of days then on to a new spot. No weakness just twitching! Slight aching at time but really no cramps! my joints pop like crazy, both shoulders and both ankle are constant! I have had this weird stuff go on for over two years, as did my twin sister after having a baby! I'm worn out from worrying! My nuero has seen me every three months for 2 1/2 years for my sake because I have been a mess! He won't do a emg, says there is no need! I was able to sneak a emg in when my nuero went on vacation from a on call dr, it was clean two years ago. It did show fasiculations though! Ashley

twitchydoc, I am only 3 months into my twitching and for the first 2 months, it was mainly in my calves and I'd get random twitches in my back, abdomen, etc. Today I have nonstop twitching everywhere. Feet, calves, thighs, shoulders, abdomen, back, neck, forearms, the area between my thumb and index finger, etc. My calves have not stopped in 3 months, but I would say my whole body is a "hotspot" at this point. The only place that I don't get much twitching is my face. So, I that's kind of a cold spot for me, haha. Cold face.

Wells- I just read your post and noticed you are a twin. I'm a twin too. I have an identical twin brother who has not had any twitching at all. He's very relaxed about things and I've always been the anxiety twin so that probably explains it. -Matt

I hear you. I'm relatively new to this, only 3 months, but I can tell you that the mind can do crazy things. The first twitch I ever noticed was in my calf. Then, about a month later, a friend of mine at work mentioned something about ALS, just in passing. So ofcourse I googled it and that's where things went haywire. THAT NIGHT, I didn't sleep one minute because the twitching spread everywhere in my body and it has been that way ever since. Prior to my first twitch, I went through periods where I was convinced that I had cancer, a brain tumor, an aneurysm, lymphoma, you name it. I have some severe health anxiety and it started after the birth of my first son. Those of you with kids will probably sympathize with that. But I have to believe that controlling the anxiety will control the twitching. As I type this, I'm looking at my calf popping and bouncing continuously and I'm having random "popcorn" twitches elsewhere in my body, and it's hard for me to think that it's all anxiety... but I would bet money on it. If we can somehow get our minds to focus on the beauty in life and truly believe what our emg tests are telling us, that these twitches are not harming us, our symptoms will probabely subside. I know, easier said than done. Personally, I've enrolled in a mind/body institute starting in September that focuses on controlling fear and living for today. I will absolutely keep everyone updated on any success I'm having or helpful tips. But I wish everyone on here the best in controlling their fears. I know we all share these strange symptoms in common and it's very unsettling when it happens to us but sometimes I think this site should be . ;) In your case Wells, you've been experiencing this for over 2+ years and had several clean EMG's (from what I've read). It certainly seems that at this point, you can rest assured that you don't have als. In fact, on the als site, most of the people well-versed in the disease will tell you that even 1 clean emg will clear you. I hope this helps. I'm struggling with it too and I wish I could heed my own advice. But I'm working on it and I'm very hopeful that someday this will be a thing of the past for all of us!- Matt

for me all over. Thing is twitches dosent bother its the *beep* body jerk twitches I get when I am in a still position where my shoulder, finger legs, butt blah blah blah blah will jerk! worse than twitching!

All over from scalp to toes. The scalp ones were strange - couldn't lay the right side of my head on a pillow for a few months while that was a hot spot. Areas come and go but I think in my 3.5 years of twitching I've had every single area twitch intensely for some time and then suddenly stop or become far less frequent. Legs are the most consistent.

I, too, have widespread twitching. I've been dealing with this for almost 1.5 yrs now. Over the course of this timeframe, my twitches have changed. I used to have hotspots, but now it's mostly random twitches all over. The one constant location has been between my right index finger and thumb. That's actually where it all started.

Follow up question for those of us with widespread twitching. I think there are many different kinds of twitches. My calves and the insteps of my feet look like electrical misfirings going off if that makes sense. The rest of my body just kind of pops... like my bicep will pop, then my back, then abdomen... all day long. Sometimes I get the electrical looking twitching in my hands though too which is kind of scary. Can anyone relate to this? When I say electrical misfirings, it's like 5 different places in my calf will go off within a second of each other. Its very different than a simple muscle twitch where it's one spot in the muscle. Normal EMG in July which was reassuring but still scary.

BobJazzy, what you are describing is exactly what I experience. when this all started for me 1 year ago, my main spot was both legs front and back along with the random pops. The legs were as you described though, like electrical current, it lasted for 3-4 solid months. I cried so much, not only because I thought the worst, but the twitching itself for me is unbearable at that degree. One day it just stopped. But I had it everywhere else still and started experiencing the hotspots in other areas... it's always changing. It has just now started in my legs again, but not nearly as bad. It's mostly if I move them after not moving them for a while. In the beginning I had 2000+ twitches a day... I ended up pregnant 3 months in to my ordeal and noticed the symptoms dropped dramatically around the time I concieved( this is also the time that the legs just stopped completely). I think this played a role in relaxing everything enough for me to get ahold of my anxiety and I noticed a steady decrease in symptoms the further along I got in my pregnancy. So, I know that anxiety reduction definately works. I just had my baby on the 18th(bfs anniversary was on the 17th) I am still twitching and noticed a slight increase, I believe because of the birth stress. But then it decreased again. I notice the more fatigued I feel the worse they are. But then they decrease again. I twitch anywhere from several hundred to 100 or less a day now....way better than when it all started. I really think time and getting ahold of anxiety are the key... of course getting a hold of anxiety is way easier said than done. I think I was only able to because of the pregnancy...something just took over and I knew I had to get ahold of myself for the babies sake....Tanya

Hi everyone, my twitches he's started in my calves then spread everywhere, I used to get some in the face mainly the chin and eyebrow but that seems to have settled down, I get them in my back too...now they are mainly my legs, butt and feet....and I am also a twin but my sister also as bfs, but she is the most laid back person alive, not at all like me...she only saw gp and went ok...bfs.....wish I was more like her......

I am also a doc. I have been fasciculating in a widespread fashion for 17 months. Started with numbness in my left foot which i still get. I also get hotspots which may last from 1 - 14 days. What really gets me down is when my left leg gets a 'rubbery' feeling. I also get cramps in my feet, calves, hamstrings and palms intermittently. Clonazepam helps as does Tegretol. Had an abnormal EMG with local neurologist. Repeated at ALS center and was normal sans fasciculations. He does not want to repeat it. AS I am writing this I am twitching all over! You are not alone!! I have slowly been cm=oming to terms with what will likely be a chronic condition. Thats okay with me, so long as it stays BCFS!mjb

MJB7002, How many fascis would you say you get a day? When this all started for me one year ago, they were at 2000+ a day EVERYWHERE!! They are down to hundreds a day EVERYWHERE!!! LOL! Also, when this all started for you were you under stress, have anxiety or have a virus?Tanya

Mine started as numbness in left foot also, right in front of heel. Wasn't really numb, I could feel sensations, but numb was the closest word I could use to describe it. Then twitches in left foot, then left calve, then...all over. Much better now (but still there), six months in.

When fasics were intense for me (they are not anymore) I had them from head to toes, including in parts of my body that I wish were "voluntary muscles" if you know what I mean ;)Of course I had the usual hotspots : calves, hands, eyelids etc etc...

Mine started out in my calves then went all over and mean every nook and cranny. Now it is in my left foot 90 percent of the time and up my left leg with a few everywhere twitches.
